Here's the story!

I just sold my m14 and a bunch of paintball gear so I have about $1800 in the bank to put toward a new precision rig. I have a Remington 700VLS in 260rem I really like. I know that 1800 will not get me into a top of the line shooter, so it must be upgradeable in the future as barrels wear out etc.

I have narrowed down the calibre to either 308 or 300 win.
I have talked to Rick at ATR and a new 700PSS with some work done to it fits in the budget or a tikka t3 tatical also fits budget wise.

I guess that my major question is what would you do? Buy a semi-custom 700pss or an out of the box t3 tactical?

I know which way I am leaning but am just looking for some validation.

Why not have your present action blue-printed, and a new barrel installed. If you already reload .260, I'm sure it'll do anything that the .308 will do.
Remember you don't just have to buy the gun, you've got to all the supplies too.

The 6.5 bullets carry far better BCs then the 30cals without the recoil penalty......plus you can probably get by without a brake. Berger and Sierra both make excellent bullets in 6.5.
 
What's wrong with your .260? Does it not shoot well? If you don't have a good scope on it now, put some money toward that, and more of the money into ammunition and range time. Once you have reached a peak with the existing rifle and barrel, there is nothing wrong with using the action as a base for a custom. Or, you could sell the rifle now, and the $1800 plus money from the sale would go a long ways toward a custom rifle.

+1, the 260 is superior to a 308 and 1800$ of mods will definetly put your rifle in the top class.

Targets primarly, I want to get adopted ;) by someone who knows ORA and get into some match shooting. But it would be nice to do double duty on game .

Range out to 600 yards for now

Got the supplies so no real issue there.


Nothing is "wrong" with my 260, it shots 5 shots to about .4moa at 100 all day long, which is why I don't really want to touch anything on it.

Originally was thinking this route, my plan was a macmillan hunter adjustable stock and a new tube, but this puts me at about $2000 pre-tax and a 4 month wait for the stock. I'd rather be shooting.



Besides everyone needs 2x long range guns.:eek: My plan was get the PSS,shoot it and the 260 to gain some practice. Next fall sell the 260 and the pss stock and put that money + some into a new stock and tube in 260ai or ???.
