Unless I'm mistaken, the Taurus line is (in Canada) next to impossible to get repaired or even to find parts for. I'm just going by second-hand information I've read on this board though - maybe it's improved recently?
I have a blue pt99. Owned it for around 12 years and never had a glitch with it. The frame seems to be holding up very well. I have no idea exactly how many rounds have been put through it but it gets shot a lot.
Parts are an issue though.
Some people here have obtained them right from Brazil as the tools in Miami have their head up their ass in regards to shipping anything up here it seems.
I'm by no means a fan of Taurus pistols... That said, $450 is a fair price for a PT99 stainless if it's in reasonable condition. Presumably, with 2 mags & the original box/papers.
As they are a near clone/copy of the Beretta pistol they will have the same eventual issues in that an aluminum frame pistol does not have the same life as a steel frame pistol. You will probably have to put one helluva lot of bullets downrange before that will become an issue, however.
As with the Beretta 92 series the grip is somewhat big. But if this pistol fits your hand & you like the feel of it... $450 would be a good deal.
$450 for a stainless one is an awesome price if the gun is in good condition.
I wouldn't worry about the alloy frame; Berettas and Sigs also have alloy frames and they are some of the best 9mm out there.
Even if you brake a locking block you get use Berettas which wouldn't be a problem to get.
I owned a Taurus .44 revolver for a year and shot about 1000 rounds of magnum loads and never had a single problem. Would I buy another Taurus? Sure, in fact my next pistol will probably be a Taurus 1911 in 9mm.
The last time (week ago) I spoke to FN Sports they said Taurus has a "good warranty" (lifetime) but it often takes month to bring parts in.
