Having owned and hunted with a 30.30, .303, 30.06, 25.06, and 300 WM...
I've concluded that, if I ever get around to buying that one nice, lightweight package to cover all my bases here in the Kootenays...whitetail, mulies and elk...it will be chambered for the .270 WSM.
I no longer believe, given the way ammunition is made these days, that heavy, and thus hard kicking, bullets are a must...save perhaps for dangerous game of the grizzled variety.
Well constructed bullets in the 110 to 150 grain range at 3000 to 3500 fps will quite efficiently plant anything from moose on down. (130 to 150 gr for the moose and elk)
The .270 has excellent ballistics, a wide selection of bullets available, and splits the difference between a 25.06 and the 300 magnums just about perfectly, IMHO.
And the WSM version offers the potential for a slightly lighter rifle over the .270 Rem., plus it flies a tad flatter and provides just enough extra oomph and due to an additional couple feet per second.
It's an excellent choice for N. American game that should do everything you could ever ask of it.
