Opinions on 6XC

I'm building an 6XC specifically to shoot the 115 Dtacs.Mysticplayer can get all the brass and bullets you need at decent prices.I'm looking to shoot it in Ottawa against the 6.5x.284's that are currently killing everyone in sniper.Should be fun!I have all the pieces except the action.Got a barrel in 7.5 from Bartlein.

Excellent!
What have you compiled so far, and what action are you thinking of going with?

Beltfed, I would look at the 6XC because this will be a mag fed rifle. I would not dismiss the 243 either. It has done very well for some tactical shooters in the US.

Big difference between a run around gun and an F O rig is size/weight.

I really don't think you want to lug a 30" musket over hill and dale. Balance for position shooting would be horrid too.

Since the barrel gets shorter, the case must get bigger to yield the same performance. The 243 can be hard on barrels but if run at SAAMI specs, really no worse then a 6XC on steriods.

There is no denying the superior accuracy potential of the 6BR/Dasher/BRX (my choice in this family) but one miss feed and you are done. Longer case is good. I would avoid shoulders steeper then 30deg unless you use a good center feed mag.

Test first as I am hearing some issues with some new mags on the market.

Now before you get sold on the 6mm for tactical shooting, have a read on the 22cal 90gr VLD thread a few posts down. The BC of this wonder slug is HIGHER then any 6mm bullet.

Yes, all new ground but I have seen some very positive results and accuracy with this bullet. Put into a 22/250, it will smoke the 6XC as far as wind drift and trajectory. Both important in unknown distance stages.

We are estimating that this bullet can exceed 3100fps in a 26" barrel. If it can do so with accuracy, it offers ballistics that beats the 6.5's and keeps up with the big boomers.

Then there is the matter of zero recoil (a bit more then a 223) so you can spot your own shots.

yes, barrel life is going to be in the 1000rds range but for tactical shooting, you can likely go 1500rds and still be sub MOA.

Since I use the Savage action, I no longer worry about barrel swaps.

If you decide you want to go 6XC, I can get you all the reloading gear and components you want.

Longshot, where do you hang out?

Hang out as in...?Not really sure what you mean Ian.
If you mean where do I shoot well I get to shoot all over the place. This year will be BC(Volkes),Connaught,Arkansas,Australia and Bisley.Mind you most of the wil be shooting service guns.I would like to shoot the NSCC sniper matches with the XC this coming summer.Love to strech its legs out to 900m.

Well its going to be a tactical rifle thats mag fed.So far it has a Bartlein 30inch 1 in 7.5 R5 barrel.McMillian A5 stock.Badger +20 moa rail on top that a Leupold M4 6.5-20x scope with TMR reticle. All the bottom metal will be custom made by my buddy Grens Vegter so it will use AIA .308 mags. The barrel and action will be Duracoated by me after I decide what colour I want it.

I'm thinking I will run it in F-Tac if that comes about and if not I will just run it wherever they'll let me shoot it.

Aside from the 30" tube (I was thinking 26"?), this is pretty much in line with my thinking and use as well.

I saw the work Grens did on Andy's rifle - simply outstanding:rockOn:
Don't suppose he'd be into making twins would he?;)

Funny you should mention that. I have a Savage 12 VLP in 1:7 I have been buggering about with sierra and Berger 80s as well as the berger 90vlds.

So far it is fairly promising, but at the end of the day I still want to mag feed it. The 90s are currently sitting at 2.500" coal, so that would be pretty extensive mods....and still be left with .223 at the end of it (which in itself isn't bad - I'd still be able to use it at matches where .223 or .308 are stipulated)
I may yet carry forward with that project, but seeing the 6s shoot - I want in on it.

Awesome:cheers:

Well he very well might be ;)
I'll probably end up using a remington action just because they are relatively cheap and easy to work on to custom mag feed...unless something else presents itself that is.
