Opinions on a few different 1911's

Is that based on your 1 bad experience, because the gun hadn't been stored properly and the there was rust under the rear site or are you aware of a series of problems with STI?
the rangemaster i got from Freedom Ventures is perfect and everyone i know that has bought one in the last few years loves em.

I've also had 2 friends with STI's that have had problems, both recently purchased. Although to clarify, the problem I had and the problem my friends had were not functional problems, just cosmetic, mine a rusty rear sight and the other 2 with visible machining marks that would make a Norinco look smooth.

Thanks a bunch for the insight everyone, nice to hear different experiences. After I made this thread I checked out irunguns site for the first time, and like enefgee posted (thank you btw) they have a Springfield ranger officer model that looks to have everything I'm looking for at a sub 1000$ price point. When my rpal shows up in the mail I think this may be the direction I go in. I believe it has a match grade barrel? Anyways I love the look, I'm not a huge fan of stainless or bling, nothing against it just trying to go for a classic, "as Uncle Sam intended" look.

Springfield makes excellent 1911s, you won't be disappointed with one. My Springfield Loaded has been perfect since day one, I've never had a malfunction with it and its laser accurate.

Where does this #### come from? I have eighteen 1911's, four of which are Kimbers. They have been rock solid.

Not as good as my NHC, but a great quality mid priced 1911.

Are you speaking from first hand experience and you ownership and use of multiple Kimbers or have you been on 1911 forum too much and drinking the "mimber" kool aid?

luckily I met people and competed with people with kimbers before I bought one (and I was all set to get one). I have not once seen a kimber run by a competitor that didn't have a ton of rework done to it or simply didn't work. These are all people who shoot alot and shoot well. As I said, they are fine guns if you want something to plink with and look pretty, they are not a gun to compete with.

I always forget about the springfields, been so long since they were brought into canada, they are a good option for sure. my recommendation is always a spartan for a budget 1911 though

I have a Colt and a Remmy R1. Both are modified. Both are very nice pistols. The Colt is just silly accurate though. Probably couldn't go wrong with any decent name brand 1911 these days. Dan Wesson would be sweet.

that springfield looks nice.
ive got a Kimber Custom II and i love it, flawless gun.
ive also got 2 Ruger SR1911's and love them as well.

for what your saying and the price point your looking i think your on the right track.
Kimber Custom II, that Springfield, Remmy R1 Enhanced, mid range STI, any of those are gonna do what your looking for and do it well.

welcome to the 1911 club, its a fun fetish!

Thanks again for all the input everyone, ya I can tell already I'm screwed. ;) Been looking at some single action revolvers, some dirty harold type revolvers... I have a 9mm carbine rifle so of course a 9mm pistol makes sense, right? My bank account hates me.

But yeah, I don't know what is so appealing about 1911's, and I've never even handled one. I think for me the history behind it, the fact its still more than relevant today and it appears that John Browning had a time machine when he invented it... Just such a cool piece.

Bumping this thread for some more opinions. I still have not decided what to go with, and of course another pistol has grabbed my eye. This will be my first pistol, and I do plan on getting a .22 trainer, just wanted some advice here. Looking at these two and want to make the deal today.

I love the 1911's and have settled on the colt if I was to get one, but the more research I do, the more I like the P226. 9mm works great for me too. Realize that .45acp is not the best choice for my first pistol but again I will be getting a trainer. What do you guys think would be best for getting into the game? I love the classic look of the colt but the sig makes my pants tight. Advice?

I don't think aditional advice is going to help you as you've received great advice already and haven't acted on any of it. Not to mention that you're all over the board now as far as what you're willing to consider.

Join a club that has range rentals or very generous members. Try as many different types and styles of handguns to see what it is you actually like. That way you can form your own opinion and have a starting point to work with. Without any personal experience, asking for someone's opinion is pointless as you have no basis of comparisson to draw on.

+1 on SR1911. I am happy with mine too. it's a keeper.

I am running the Ruger SR1911 and am very happy with it! It's nice to look at but I don't hesitate to shoot it and holster it as well. Buy something that you won't just want to leave in the safe.

STI!!!

I have a Ranger, which I know is not something you want because of the commander length, BUT, it's an awesome handgun, and I've never had one regret about buying it. I am (at least) the second owner, and one of the previous owners was a little too aggressive with tuning the ejector and left an idiot mark by installing an aftermarket extended slide stop (which was a HUGE PITA!!!!) --- one email for each issue to STI and the OEM parts were sent to me, FOC!!!! You couldn't ask for better service!!!

^^^ I love Commander length 1911's. The way they balance in your hand feels great. I much prefer it to standard 5.0" Gov't length models.

A Spartan is in my future. If you like 1911's, you owe it to yourself to own at least one good one.

Thanks again for all the input guys. I went with the colt 1911a1. I also found a instructor in town who is NRA certified and does IPSC... He offers courses so gonna see about lining up a range day with him and learn a thing or three. Thanks again for all the input and opinions, much appreciated.
