Hey everyone,
I am in the market for a rifle for range use.
I currently have my eyes on a Remington 700 S model
It has a XPS adjustable trigger, 30" stainless Krieger Blank Barrel in .308 1-13.5 twist (polmer barrel)
Hid spaced to 15 thou from the lands

$1000.0
this will be my first rifle that's not a .22lr
is this a good price?
I know Krieger barrels are expensive on their own not including any gun smithing involved etc...

opinions will be greatly appreciated.

It could be an excellent rifle.
Retired ORA target rifle?
Who put the barrel on the action?
How many rounds through the barrel?
What is the stock?

Sounds like an excellent buy. A Krieger barrel is worth $500+ before fitting. A Bell and Carlson Trophy stock is worth ~$ 600+ landed given the exchange rates. The only caveat is that the twist rate seems a little slow for my tastes but should be fine shooting 155 grain bullets.

So, i know this is set for target
If i wanted to hunt i guess it wouldnt be good.
E.i.. Deer n Moose?

It would perform fine on game, but a 30"barrel is really long and heavy for carrying.

If you want a hunting rifle, you could get this and change the barrel out, and sell off the 30 incher on there.

I can get a stock 300wm for half that price.
Nothing done to it. .
I dont mind the kick.
I just saw this beauty.
Like i said mostly target, but would like to possibly hunt

But that 300wm doesn't come with a bell and carlson stock does it?

If you can afford it, get it. You could tear it down and sell the barrel and stock for nearly what you paid for the whole gun... or just keep it that way and enjoy it. You can always buy a dedicated hunting rifle down the road, or change barrels later...

Seeing as you posted the identical thread twice, I will reply to it twice.

My opinion is you need some more edumacation on what all that stuff means BEFORE you buy any rifle.

1. A barrel blank is a barrel that has not been chambered or fitted to a rifle. As this appears to be a complete rifle, the barrel cannot possibly be a "blank".

2. Not really sure what a "polmer" barrel is. Are we talking "Palma" or "polygonal"? To my knowledge Krieger's are cut rifled.

3. It is not possible to "hid space" any portion of the barrel to the lands. Head Space is a measurement of the chamber and the cartridge case only. It is possible to load ammo to a specific distance from the lands but that is the bullet seating depth and has nothing to do with the headspace.

With respect to the few bits of your post that do make some sense, a 30" barrel will be bloody heavy so I hope you don't plan to carry this rifle anywhere. A 1:13 twist is a bit slow so it will be limited to 150gr bullets.

Is that a good price? Depends if the rifle is suitable for what you want to do with it? Is $20,000 a good price for a Ferrari? Not if you need a pickup truck. The value is also highly dependent on who built the rifle and how it shoots. If the person who gave you all that info is the same person who built the rifle then I would consider running away from that deal as fast as possible because they haven't got a clue what they are talking about.

Sorry, my knowledge isnt great and guy at store has english accent so tough on phone lol.
I posted twice cuz i thought this was the right place...i sisnt know how to move it.
I appreciate your advice , help and opinions.
I am learning as we go.
Like i said ...first rifle bigger than 22.
I want to be able to range and hunt
Any ideas?

I value and appreciate your opinion .
So as I am to understand the twist is the amount of full turns a projectile makes at so many inches...e.i. 1 full turn for every 10 inches would be 1:10 twist.
So a hunting projectile 165 to 180 gr might be better off with 1:9.5 or 10 in .308.
Now since you seem to appear to know your stuff.
Can I switch off the barrel when I want to hunt?
I believe the contour is Palma if that makes sense.
It was Sales guy to was reading info to me on phone.
He's got complete paperwork on build.

Ok so if I bought this rifle.
I can always buy a barrel for hunting?
Are 700 actions universal or calibre specific.

No, they aren't "universal". That is not a thing.

remington 700 actions are Short or Long actions which means they have 2 different lengths of actions. Any long or short action can have any size of bolt face for specific calibers. for example a short action 308 has a 11.96 mm bolt face diameter. This is shared with 3006, 260 rem, 7-08 ...etc, but you can have a bolt face diameter in a short action with with a bolt face diameter of 14.1 mm for 300 WSM which is shared with 7 WSM...etc.

If you were a gunsmith you could modify and swap out parts as necessary, but that is expensive. You're not going to safely be able to swap out a barrel without correct tools.

My suggestion would be not to use a 30 inch barreled rifle to hunt with it. Additionally I would also look in the Hunting sections and not PR for advice on that application.

Thanks.
Im torn cuz i may never actually hunt.
Its been a thought. Moose has never been interest.
So chances are it will be a range gun.
I just dont wanna over pay.

I would avoid a custom gun at the stage you are at. There are lots of good deals on the EE right now for the same price as you are looking at. If you want Remington 700s there are a few. Some nice savages as well. Being a new shooter and having just gone though a similar choice I would go 223. If you are stuck on 308 giver but I had better success with 223 than with 308. Seems like a logical progression from a 22 and is cheaper to shoot than a 308.

As other have said, not trying to rain on your parade but you are not ready for any sort of a custom rifle. Buy your self a factory rifle and shoot factory ammo, do your home work and ask questions to ppl who have some knowledge. Lots of good and bad advice out there and it takes time to figure out which is which. Good luck with whatever you decide.
