Opinions on a possible rifle purchase!!!!!!!!!

270 is a turd. Go with a good factory 308 and learn. Rem700, savage or tikka are all good. Get a heavier barrel.
This might sound dumb, but you need to spend about as much on glass. If you're not budgeting 800-1200 for a decent scope, you might as well stick to pistols and shotguns.

yeah 270 is a turd. Keeping a 170gn bullet supersonic out to 1 mile is crappy, who wants that.

I'm not saying the ballistics suck. The available bullets on the other hand are fairly limited. .277 is the red headed step child to bullet manufactures. If there was a decent bullet selection, I'd be all over a .277/284 or .277-08 AI. The same goes for 25 cal cartridges. I think there's lots of potential there for bullets In that calibre too, but little to no support from bullet manufactures.

I didn't know Berger made a 170gr bullet in .277. Hopefully more follow suit. It would suck to spend $800 or better to get a barrel chambered for the 170 Bergers to find out they don't shoot in that barrel.

had a good chuckle at that, little bit much no?. A 10x fixed bushnell served me quite well for a long time until upgrading to my first "decent" lr scope, a bushnell 4200 6-24 which was still under 600 and would be more than ample for a beginner. Check out the ee for some decent deals, just gotta be on it. Not downplaying the need for decent glass, just you don't need to drop that much off the bat. Everyone's crying out that he's not ready for a custom gun, yet he needs a high dollar scope?? Why not scoop up a good buy and shoot 150s out of it? Your getting a good stock, trigger, new barrel, tried action for a 1000? I'd scoop it up, a new Remington gonna cost close to that anyway, yet without any upgrade .

Not interested in 223
Maybe 270.
I been shooting pistols n shotguns.
Rifles are new to me

Why .270? When you begin to reload -- and you'll have to if you want to shoot a lot -- the bullets available are more limited than if you were reloading .308 Win. If you want a different caliber than the other guys at the range, consider the .243 Win., which is a great caliber for precision shooting.

Not sure if it's too much or not? Starting out with a scope that tracks perfectly and has decent glass will help a new shooter. Knowing your glass is working like it should allows you to really focus on your position. It helped me anyway.

So after a lot of thought.
I think hunting is way down the road for me.
I enjoy range and target more. At least with my pistols
And for 1000 its a good buy. I see a lot of guns on ee for hunting for reasonable price if i decide down the road.
I agree with j_06
I've never hunted rifle in my life.
Just thought if i could get something that does both
But after research ..its one or the other as far set up.
Range shooting is what I do most and most stock Rem 700's are $700 with no upgrades

I was typing the same message yesterday, got busy, and never posted it.

If you can get a trued R700 action, Custom barrel, and a good stock all for $1000 you need to get all over that! "MOST" will agree that any even semi custom is going to be a better rifle than a factory rifle. Save your money for good optics and a good ridged stock to bed that barreled action into.

Worst case, you dont like it and you sell it on the EE for exactly what you paid for it or even a few bucks more.

Sounds like not a bad deal. If it was me I would prob buy it and have the barrel cut down to 22 or 24 inches then put a used SightronIII on it .
