Opinions on BHP for IPSC

I am considering buying a Browning Hi Power for IPSC. I've always found that the Browning "feels right" and points well for me at work.
The question I'm wrestling with is if I should go .40, or go with the 9mm and just load to shoot major? I have no experience with the .40s but I've heard (second hand) that they are not as accurate and may have less life in them due to the gun being intended for 9mm (again, this is second hand info).
Advice, opinions?

Keep in mind that Minimum bullet caliber for Major is 10mm (0.40”) in IPSC Standard Division. (9mm cannot shoot for Major score)

Maurice, I asked Moe during the BB course and he said that he didn't know anyone who had used a .40 BHP for IPSC. Is this an indicator that it would be a bad idea?

I was speaking with a buddy in the US about using a BHP in IPSC - There seemed to be some question whether or not the frame would hold up to a few years of 20k + rounds a year in .40.

9mm is no longer allowed to be loaded to major (that was a while ago IIRC)

Shoot the damn Kimber...

That's what I did my BB with, but it's a bit picky with the ammo, and it needs heavy rounds and hot loads, great for what the gun was meant for, not so great on the last match (trying to unlearn a lot of CF live fire drills didn't help much either mind you)

I thought he said he used a 9mm BHP?
 
Hey Rob, I shot my BB with my 9mm HP. It was a commercial model with the extended safety and external extractor. It was okay, but I wanted to go with double action for production. Got a Glock 17 now. Very slick. I shot my first match with it and had no problems. Gun wise not score wise! Anyway, BHP wasn't that bad. I too had to un-learn alot of bad CF induced gun drills.

Major/Minor won't make a difference if you shoot A's. If it fits you and you like it, shoot it. only the top guys really compete, the rest of us participate, and remember, it's for fun.

9 mm MAY be loaded to Major but only in Open Division which many competitors are now starting to do. The power floor for Major in Open is 160.

(Theoretically 9 mm may also be loaded to Major in Revolver Standard Division but that would be to 170 PF)
 
my question is this: do you care, at all, about your score, in IPSC? If no, and you like the feel of the HP, go for it, whatever caliber you prefer. If you do care, even a little bit, get something else. The fact that it's SA means you cannot compete against us shooting in the duty-style-gun division ("Production"), so your scores will be compared against people running around with $5000 custom built race guns. Also, that safety isn't something that's quick to flip off during the draw (HP fans, don't even try to tell me how easy/great/etc it is, I've seen and used enough HPs to know that a race/quick draw is NOT something that gun will do, if you have to flip the safety off).

So... do you care about your scores, relative to others/anyone else? if not, go for it, and enjoy every shot! If you do care about scores, shooting the HP in IPSC would like somewhat like bringing your honda civic to a NASCAR race. Sure you can do it, and you can have fun with it, but chances are you score will never reflect your abilities, no matter how hard you try ;)
 
So Robak,

The question to you (and asked so often by so many) so far is

How much do you like the BHP vs. How much do you want to be competitive?

There is no wrong answer, either.

If you like the grip of the BHP, would a CZ have a similiar grip?
 
the cz-75 is based on the HP design, with some small changes ("improvements"), so if you like the HP you should like the CZ-75 or CZ-85Combat, for example (just don't get the SA model, since you'll be in the same situation as with the HP!)
 
I would say go for the CZ that Omen is talking about....a lot of shooters do well by it.
