I currently shoot 270.win What does everyone recommend for a faster flatter caliber that still gives good punch I deer hut prairies


I want good hitting power with minimal drop


I hand load so I am flexible

Keep on keepin on :cool:. Learn the wind/drop withe the bullet of your choice and just fawkin giver' :cheers:.
 
I like my .270 but I am buying a new gun and I wan to take advantage of the situation and get a better caliber if possible
 
270wsm with a 130 gr Accubond @ 3200-3300 fps will flatten the trajectory a bit over your 270 Win. You may also want to consider the 257 Wby Mag or 264 Win Mag too, especially since you handload.

270 win is a perfect moose/deer gun..... Hell, add Caribou, Elk, Sheep, Bear, Coyote, Wolf, Bigfoot... you get the idea....

IMHO.. the 270 win is a great choice for the perfect all around cal..

If you handload, I agree the 257 wby might be a good option and perhaps the 6.5x55 swede might work well.....
 
7WSM or 25-06 are both cool choices. :D

The 7 because of a great selection of bullets and a very high BC (if you need it), WSM for the short action/lightweight, and since you handload, ammo won't be a problem.

25-06 just 'cos. :D
 
Nothing wrong with the 270, but like most of the rest of us this is likely more about want than need.

The 7mags are nice in open country and (recoil wise) are easy to hit with....There will not be much if any difference in hitting power over the 270.

If you are looking for more power at reasonable recoil levels I would suggest the 300Win. Loaded with 200gr bullets it behaves very much like a 338 yet is a bit more adept at long range shooting. The 200 Accubond at 2900-2950fps is great in the wind, delivers awesome downrange energy, and is a superb game bullet.

Flat trajectory has very little to do with hitting at long range. Once you begin shooting beyond 300 yards you should know how far the target is and you must have a known trajectory correction for the range and environmental conditions......The faster 180's will not help you hit anything more readily than the 200grs.

get a range finder and and an elevation turret on your scope, and you'll find out that flat shooting isn't all that important. Even with the 3000+ fps cartridges, the bullet drop past 350 yards is enough that if you're off in range guesstimation & holdover, you'll miss or worse
 
Another nod for the 270 Win. Moose are no problem, especially if you handload with some of the tough bullets available today. But what the heck, you only go around once, so get whatever tickles your fancy!!

7 mm rem mag. Flat shooter, great bullet selection, great ammo availability, and may be used from antelope to moose. Don't let them tell you different.

If yoiu want more killing power than your 270 you'll need to more to a larger dia. bullet. You've got the perfect Deer gun, now get a .338. Or you could get a .308 and have Grizzlies covered too.
