Opinions on changing the russian sks stock to tacticool

Your choice but I would leave it in the original stock, or swap a laminate on it and refinish it. Just buy a real black rifle you will enjoy it more.
 
Judging by how many tacti-### ones I always see for sale on the EE, I think that's a good indication of people trying to recoup their losses....
 
Just buy 2 if you're concerned about regretting it.

One tacti-cool one and then one as a nice collectible when the prices jump. Best of both worlds.

I dropped mine into a Monte Carlo stock and after a bit of shimming I find it much more enjoyable to shoot. the factory stock was a terrible fit for the rifle and myself so now it sits in the back of my closet
 
I have 2 Russian SKS', one of which I tacticooled just because I darned well felt like it!!! ;)

It also made mounting a small 4x scope much easier, and it has the added benefits of being able to adjust length of pull (it's too short for me and many others).

My other SKS is just like it came out of the factory.
 
My SKSs are staying totally stock. They were the tacticool rifle when first issued/tested in 1945.

Maybe I'll smoothen one of my stocks and paint it flat black, that's the most I'll give in to the tacticool look.

In the future, the only thing they need when the SHTF is to drill out the magazine pin/block.
 
I think the only thing that matters is are you enjoying the rifle? If modding it up is your thing and you enjoy it then have fun! Personally, I did all the crazy mods and ended up being dissatisfied with the finished product. I put everything back to bone stock, sold all the extras on the EE and now I shoot my SKS much more than before. Whatever floats your boat though as long as your shooting!
 
I was thinking about getting cool stock for my SKS, but all options I saw so far make SKS diffiult to clean or require some permanent modifications which could potentialy make SKS not as reliable or it's too expensive and move SKS in XCR price range with doubtful benefits.There are also stocks like Monte-Carlo, but it's not really a tacticool one and length of pull might be increased with recoil pad really.
 
There used to be a guy who sold factory 1" stock extensions on the EE. I picked one up from him. I believe his user name is Mobular. If all you're looking for is a little more LOP that'd be the way to go in my opinion. Doesnt change the look of the gun much at all (you probably wouldnt notice it at all unless you know its there).
 
I've got several tacticool SKS rifles and they are great for their intended purpose which is for beginner shooters to have fun with a short range "sniper" rifle that is usually shot at 100m on steel plates.

My favorite mods for an SKS are to install a peep sight and a HiCaliber magazine adapter. I bought one set up just like that fromt he EE and it's by far my favorite SKS. Other than those 2 mods it's pretty much as issued.
 
I'm taking a different wood stock and using that to tact mine with. What I do to it don't matter .
Give it a camo paint job , short rail on the bottom for bipod ...ect..
I can do this without doing anything which would change the actual rifle's originality.
Other that taking out a replaceable pin or two , I wont touch the receiver / barrel .
..cheekriser , 3 point sling (?) , Advanced rail system...
These rifles are made to be able to swap out different parts at any given time , so , a wood surplus stock is my choice and much better chance for a good fit the first time..yeah , I'll be shooting with it first ;)
...5/10 rd mags , extended mag release...
 
Tacticool is not worth the time or money for a sks. We all shoot sks for the cost effective centre fire ammo and is NR. That and its got a cool retractable sharp thing on the end! The tacticool crap won't make it shoot any better than it does. You can chase that green fairy as long as you wish its still an sks. Save the money you would have spent on tacticool crap and put towards a tacticool manufactured firearm. Like a AR 15. I've spent the money on the tacticool crap and was a waste. The good tactically stuff is restricted or prohib. So get your restricted.
 
Its your rifle so do what you want with it, but keep in mind a $200 rifle is still a $200 rifle no matter how much plastic you add to it.


I personally keep mine to the original config, and I buy up parts and stocks left over from mods and Bubba-gone-bad. 40 years ago people said the same thing about Lee Enfields and chopped the crap out of them but now are trying to restore them and find the parts they threw away and lost because they were worthless.
 
It would be fun to start a challenge, that pits the tacticool SKS's. Againts the stock purists.....

Make it sortof like Riflechairs challenge ya know, all targets being 8", points for hits, and points for overall time. See if all the tacticool gear actually does improve the guns performance.

A scope would certainly improve some groups for guys with aging eyes, but realistically you can only expect so much from surplus ammo. It will never be a tack driver no matter how much of your hard earned money you throw into it. If someone wants a precision rifle, there are so many other worthwhile platforms to put your money on. An SKS will always shoot like a $200 rifle regardless how pretty you make it.
 
Tacticool away, just keep all the parts to put it back into its original condition... And post pics!

If you have a matching, blued beuty buy another one and tacticool that. If you have non matching or bbq paint go to town.

Even if value increases the matching blued non refurbs are gunna be at the top of the food chain followed by the refurb matching blued with the bbq painted matching next followed by bbq painted missmatched.

Bbq painted refurbs are fantastic shooters and very durable finnish for bush use, good to customize.
