Opinions on Eotech Holo Sights

Love my 553. Quick release, cowitnesses with my flip up sights. Works very well. 1 moa dot in the middle for better accuracy, and you don't sacrafice speed thansk to the big circle for fast/quick shooting.

I opted for this over the aimpoint mostly for the 1 moa dot. I like accuracy when I'm at the range.

My use is strictly for the range. So my considerations are based on that, not combat etc.

Test one out before you purchase (if possible). Some people, particularly those with astigmatism, have trouble with the laser image being very grainy and fuzzy. It happened to me, I bought one and thought it must be trash, handed it to my wife and she said it was crisp as can be. So I sold it and got a Dr. Optik instead. YMMV

yep, try it out before you buy it (if you are serious about buying one, im sure most local gun stores would let you try it out) Just remember, when you're testing it out, to focus/concentrate on a wall or something and NOT on the reticle.

I would get the AA battery model, since they tend to have less problems than the N-cell versions, however I would still keep the batteries out if you're storing it for long periods of time.

Also, just keep in mind, that with US Dept. of state happenings, that the warranty on it MAY not be usable, compared to an Aimpoint made in Sweden.

LOVE my EoTech.

As already posted, try it out before you buy it, but as long as your eyes are good, the sight will be good for you.

And of course, focus on your target, not the reticle. The idea is that you look at your threat/target, and while maintaining that focus, bring the sight up in line. With practise it's as fast as bringing your gun up. I do a lot of shooting with my AR with Eotech on top, and it is fast. I originally co-witnessed it with a carry-handle iron sight, but I've since switched to the ARMS #40 flip up sight. I keep the sight folded down, it's just there as a back up, but I've never had my Eotech go down anyways. It's a zero-paralax sight, which means that if you can see the reticle, that centre is where the bullet's going.

Some people don't trust it, but with an 11.5" barrel, topped with the Eotoech & the back up sight folded down, I've shot it at 600m. The target was a steel gong the size of a human torso, and after 2 shots to find a point of aim, I hit it every shot for 8 consecutive shots. Some of my other guns can't hit a target that size at 600m 10 times in a row with a 9X Leupold on them, so I don't think that's bad. The sight will shut itself off (I believe after 4 hours) to conserve battery, but for competition use, that's moot anyways.

I use the 512 model; full length, AA batteries. I see no reason to go with a 513, since I don't need the room on the rail, and it really doesn't cut down on weight. And unless you plan on doing a lot of shooting using night vision behind your sight, there's NO reason to buy the 552/553. You'd be better off with a laser anyways in that case. :D

Cheers.

I have a 512 (AA batteries). Holds zero just fine even when used on a "woods" gun that gets bumped around plenty. Reticle suits my 40+ year old eyes just fine; my dad can't use it at all since his cataract surgery - try before buy!!! Thing I like the best is the wide-open field of view and superfast target acquisition. It will hit anything I point it at out to 100 meters (if I do my part!). I prefer the EOTech to my Aimpoint, hands down. That said, the EOTech is big and clunky on the rifle compared to the Aimpoint and tends to get fetched up in the alders when bushwhacking. Mine is 3 years old and has only used 2 sets of batteries; yeah, I just leave them in (duracells). My experience only, your mileage may vary.

i have the 552.A65/1 http://http://www.eotech-inc.com/product.php?id=3&cat=2
like it for the double AA batteries. never a problem bright light or dusk. mounted a red laser (glock GLS) under the rail and it works out well. Only problem (not a biggie) i have noticed is that at close (<10 yrds) it shoots low. LMK if anyone else has had this occurance.

If mounted on an AR this is normal. The barrel sits well below the sight plane.

I've used a 552 both of my own and at one at work, I love them. Really fast in close and the centre dot allows precision out far.

The only advantage with the 553 is the quick release mount. It's the perfect height and makes changing to a scope or going to the back up sights, very quick. I really like it. The night vision capability isn't really a selling feature to me.

Hey tim, do you have a riser on your 512 or do you co-witness without it?

Lazedout,

I have my Eotech mounted on the rifle's rail, no riser. I use the stock front sight, and like I said an ARMS #40(L) BUIS. It cowitnesses perfectly, If I take my time to line up the sights perfectly the red dot sits right on the top center of the front post. BTW, that is a good way to rough zero the eotech (or any co-witnessed red-dot) if your iron sights are already dialed in.

As far as shooting low at close ranges, that's going to happen no matter what sight you put on your AR. Obviously there's a huge gap between the centre line of the sight & the bore. Just keep the barrel/sight relationship in mind if you're shooting competition at varying ranges.

Cheers.

I have the following: 553 SOCOM, 511.A65, 557.AR223, 552.A65/1. I love Eotech HWS. They are fantastic sights and are quick as can be. Fellas, I have read on few different sites that some were very unhappy with Eotech sights. It has been determined that some of these guys were sold knock off (fake) Korean/Chinese copies. There are some extremely good offshore copies circulating that have wound up in LEO and Military units. These were Officer/GI purchased and not Govt issued items. Checkout Eotech`s web site where they have a page on differentiating between real and fake Eotech HWS. A real eye opener! First thing I did was check my stash to see if I had any dubious sights.......it pays to buy from reputible dealers as I have all the real deals! No, I am not a hack for Eotech either........I also own many Aimpoint, Elcan and Trijicon products!

Most of the Eotech mil/LE users do not buy them with thier own money, they are department purchase through official suppliers. There are several issues with the Eotech line, there have been numerous threads on the topic.

To be fair, I still own one Eotech that functions well...I just got tired of swapping batteries halfway through missions so it is purely a range accessory now.

I know a lot of guys who have purchased their own Eotechs to put on their weapons. The 1 RCR Battle group that was overseas in 2006/2007 were allowed to use their own gear. The 2 RCR BG that was over in 2007 had 2 issued to each section, but I know a few guys that put their own sights on their C7/C8 when they got out to the FOBs. It mostly depended on who the FOB'r was. :p

I also know a handfull of Americans from 7th group who've purchased their own Eotechs. Some just prefer them to the Aimpoint.

I personally have a Eotech 552 on my "work gun," and over seas I never once had to change batteries half way through a mission. I would change batteries once every 2 weeks, better safe than sorry. However I know some guys who changed their batteries once over a 6-month period and never had the sight go down, other than when it shuts itself off after 4/8 hours.

Cheers.

I've owned several Eotechs, and sold them all. I had the infamous battery spring failure on two, and have seen several others go TU on courses with this same failure. It's also very entertaining watching someone's Eotech fall right off their rifle because they didn't loctite the "Don't loctite this screw" screw.

That, and I don't want a sight that decides when it's time to turn off - I'll make that choice, thank-you very much.

As far as red dot sights go, I happily now own only Aimpoints.

I have been using a eotech 512 and an arms 40Lsp for
awhile.Happy with it so far.I posted to see what others
thought.Interesting opinions & experiences posted.
