i'm looking to buy a heavy barrel 308 for range use. nothing more than 300 yds . being more a hunting rifle type of guy the choices are confusing. it seems there are an abundance of resonably priced savages like the fp's with an assortment of stock choice , rem sps tactical or police. was also looking at tikka varmint all in 308. what would be the pick new or used for arround a $1000 rifle only. i have never owned savage but have had lots of rems and tikkas. any opinions and maybe suggestions on something i haven't thought of.

The only real difference I can see is the availability of parts and accessories. The Rem and Savage are pretty even in those fields. The Tikka is a tougher animal to work with. I'm not a big "tuner" as far as bolt guns go so I can't really say. I do love my Savage 10fp in .223(and have a 10fp in 308 for sale too ;))

I you are confused now, dont bother looking at the new 2009 product line for Remington, 5 + new 'tactical offerings' of the ubiquitious 700 line, I am a 700P guy and endorse the line heavily........:)

i own and have owned many rems. i like that there easily tuned if there not shooting as good as you want. is there any difference between the offering or is a matter of personal prefernce. i see tactical rifles offered with 20, 24 and 26 inch barrels. there offered with h&s and mac stocks. the combinations are boggling. its like going to subway!

Commercial hunting rifles are all pretty much the same. Have a look at the Savage 12 FVSS though. Heavy barreled SS. MSRP is $815US. Hard to beat a Savage for out of the box accuracy. Good ammo is essential.
Epp's is listing a Savage 10 FCP "HS Precision Law Enforcement" at $1138.28. You do pay extra for the 'Law Enforcement' though.

Just bought an Australian International Arms Mk4 #4 Model 10 Lee Enfield lookalike in 7.62 Nato. from Marstar. Have a look at their website. I have only fired it with iron sights, but it is a beauty. Just mounted a scope and hope to have an opportunity to sight it in soon.
