Opinions on SA 1911-A1 Mil-spec

I am now also considering picking up a 1911 style pistol(among others) and have been looking around a bit. The SA Mil-spec has cought my eye as one of the more affordable. I love my XD-9, but I don't know much about the 1911's. Can I expect the same kind of reliability out of them? As always, your input is appreciated.
Thanks, KO

1911

Pretty tuff to beat the price and reliability of a Norinco 1911 that has been "prepped" by ARMCO that advertises on this board. $449.00 with two mags and guananteed to run flawlessly. Also a warranty for the first year.

I have a .45 and when he gets some NP29 pistols in I plan on getting one from him.

I have had my SA Mil-Spec for almost 2 years now, and I have absolutely no complaints. It’s a little more expensive than a Norinco, but it comes out of the box looking and fitting much better than most NP29’s. I don’t regret for even a second spending the extra cash on a SA pistol instead of a Norinco.

The only customization I have done is replaced the factory grips with Pachmayr American Legend grips. It is a very accurate pistol and has fired around 1500 rounds without a single problem.

From reading comments on the 1911 Forum the SA Mil-Spec is a crap shoot. Some work great out of the box others not so great. Norincos from my experience and those of others on the 1911 Forum just go bang all the time. In the US, because they are not imported there anymore due to an Executive Ordre by Clinton, the Norincos have reached almost a cult status.

If this is your first 1911, then you will not be disappointed in a Norinco for around $350 - $400. Gunnar at Armco does a nice trigger job on the guns he sells and for the additional money it is worth it. Be prepared to change out the sights at some point, though if your eyes are good you may like the mil-spec sights on the guns. The NOrks are built like tanks with likely the hardest frames and slides of any 1911 made today.

Contact JimV on http://www.1911forum.com/forums/. He is a great guy and can fill you in on the guns. 1911Tuner on http://forum.m1911.org/ spent a year examining Norincos and has posted his thoughts on that forum.

I've had experience owning and shooting Norinco 1911's and Springfield Armory 1911's. It's kinda like comparing apples and oranges (different price points).

At around the $ 400 price point, I loved my .45 and my NP29 9mm Norinco. Both shot well and reliably. I regret selling them, but my fingers were little sore and scratched from the sharp edges... mind you, an India stone smoothed that out. I'm still saving up for another NP29 once Marstar gets them in....

At around the $ 875 price point, I still love and shoot both my .45 AND 9mm Springfields. Much better fit and finish, lovely to look at and lovelier to shoot. Better yet, I just got out this morning in the cold snow and my friend put through 50 rds of .45 ammo through the Springer. Both my Springers shoot point of aim, point of impact. I could not ask for a better setup.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Would I choose one brand over the other ? Hell, just buy BOTH brands. In the meantime, if that option is not available, go visit your favorite gun shop and hold them in yer hand(s). See what feels right and which ones you and your budget can live with.

When I was over at www.ellwoodepps.com for example, I picked up a Springfield Armory Loaded M1911 in .45 and I immediately said, "I HAVE GOT TO GET ME ONE OF THESE !!" That's when I bought a .45 Springer in a parkerized finish, since I'm a Service Pistol kinda guy.

My Norinco NP29 was a fabulous shooter and I do have to say, I'm gonna get another and re-finish it since bluing just drives me bananas. I plan on having the pistol "de-horned" or sharp edges stoned down and then I'll have the pistol bead blasted and re-parkerized.

I hate to advise you what YOU should buy, but frankly the Norcs are a great start into the handgun addiction. Great entry price also. Later on you will realize why I suggested that you just get both. Work a few extra shifts... trust me... you ain't gonna regret the 1911 purchase with either brand.

Cheers and happy shopping.
