Opinions on stock reinforcing bolts vs dowel

Hi, The best way I find is, Take a long brass screw threaded all the way, First drill smaller, clamp stock ( for crack repair) and install screw, leave screw sticking out on both end, then cut screw flush, dress up, done. Thanks

There are many ways of doing things, and this was/is a common one. European gunsmiths would often cap the bolt ends with walnut plugs, aligning the wood grain.

As for the imbedded or "hidden" bolt technique, one doesn't need a large bolt, usually less than 1/8" is enough, expecially if some epoxy coumpound is injected into the crack -a small hole can be drilled following the wood grain and the compound injected by a syringe. A variant of the above technique is to drill two crossed holes at an angle (when possible) and insert two epoxyed threaded pins, which are crossing one ove the other through the crack.

Baribal...What model HVA is that in the bottom pic (( commercial, 1600 etc ))...reason I'm askin..I just did some stock work on one for a buddy. His OE stock got busted (????? ) and the replacement he got...well, ..it wasn't the right stock for his rifled action. It's the same action you posted on here tho
I had to fill in the bolt stop notch ( it was wayy too long )...then recut and blend it...also a little spot just rearward of the BS...when the bolt was rearward..added a 1/4 " piece there as well.
It was a lot of fiddle - faddle...but I got it done. Looks good now. ..oh...btw....there's no cross pins in his stock.

Thankx in advance..Kevin
