Found one that might be of interest.
Figured owning an RPAL one should at least have a wee shewter?

Have my eye on a Browning Challenger as well.

One more better than the other for roughly the same price point?

I have a Sportsman; shoots great, shoots accurate, great factory trigger, handles all kinds of ammo

The supermatic trophy and their "space-gun" were the best pf the best. The supermatic is being built again in Texas, and sells in the US for over 1000. If the one you are talking about is here on the EE and on #######, I know the gun. It belonged to a former member of our club, and was shot with much precission, and cared for meticulously.

It is also a great buy.

Brownings are fine, but a number of the good old boys have both, and the high standards are the ones that get used the most.

New guys, its ruger, ruger, ruger, yet they are often outshot with the old HS.

Buy it!

if you are talking about this model, then yes the High Standard is superior to the Challenger, but make sure it is a Hamden made gun.
If it is not this gun, then the challenger is as good or better (Best is to look for a Belgium made Challenger, like on the second picture)
A Browning Medalist is even a better choice.

I have one of each. They are both very solid guns - nice fit and finish. Neither are fussy on ammo. I seem to shoot the HS a little better. If I was forced to get rid of one, it would probably be the Browning - but I'm not - so I won't.
 
If you can, ensure the magazines for the HS are in good shape and functional. If they are then the HS would be my choice. If the mags aren’t good don’t bother with the HS unless you can get an excellent price. The magazines on the HS can be a puzzle.

Username “Marshall” in Swift Current SK has extensive experience with High Standards. Shoot him a PM if he doesn’t pop up in here; he’s helped me out with HS knowledge several times.
 
Great great guns, but 1940s technology. And yes, somethings just keep working. My father got into the Olympics with a HS.

Having a lot of time to play these days and being somewhat undecided, :redface: I ended up acquiring the following four;
- A High Standard Supermatic Citation
- A Browning Medalist and 'trimmings'
- A Colt Match Target, short barrel
- Smith & Wesson model 41, short barrel
To be truthful, :) I be hard pressed to say any one is all that much better than another. They all shoot about the same for me. I'll have to thin them out, perhaps, one of these days. I still haven't made any other photo posting since photobucket went squirrelly but I'll e-mail you a photo.

Your Hammerli looks interesting. I've never shot one, very nice. Probably one of the best shooters I had was a Walther GSP with .22 and .32 kits. Ugly but it was a beauty to punch paper with.
 
I had a beautiful High Standard Victor and a Browning Medalist Five years ago, but unfortunately I had to thin the herd.
Both the old High Standards and the old Brownings are well worth owning, Accurate, great triggers, & fit and finish.
Sometimes I wish I still had them, but I still have my trusty Model 41.
 
The supermatic takes the same magazine as my Sportsman, replacements, when you can find them, run around 100.00 ; as another members stated, the triggers are the best in the industry, even now.

I came very close to getting a HS last fall but could not find extra mags so passed.. maybe this year

That's been one of my objectives at the last few local gun shows. I now have a spare mag for each of the four I listed in my previous post # 10. Oh, neglected to mention, with the HS Supermatic Citation came a set of Herritt's target grips, in addition to the original set the gun came with.
