Opinions on the Mini 14?

I've tried the Mini 14 and enjoyed it. Not as accurate or as fun as the AR. If it's just for the range the AR would be nice.

wow lots of feedback with a general consensus...thanks guys...I like the look of the rifle but was unaware it was fairly inaccurate...

There is quite a bit of mini 14 bashing on this board, but don't let it put you off. I can definitely say the newer ones have good accuracy.

I think the newer Mini's are being painted with the brushes of the older versions - Options are hard to change once they hit the 'net

Do a little research on what the better series are.

I have the mini 14 target with 3x9x50 scope, and a M4 with A2 sight, I love them both. My mini 14 target gets 1" groups @100 meters (don't put too many rounds through in a short amount of time as stainless barrel gets hot bpretty fast.). M4 is a great gun to shoot, but I wouldn't invest a big $$$ scope for it, it defeats the purpose, after all, it is assault rifle, it is great for fast shooting.

I agree about the Mini14 and the barrel heating problem. I actually burned myself once on the barrel. The Mini is not made for rapid fire but for varmint hunting and it's very good for that. Super dependable. Get an M4 if you want to really let loose a bunch of lead.

I wonder how much better the MINI would be if the amount of money for R@D that has been put into the AR platform had been spent on helping the MINI.

This guys likes his.

I just bought a used Target model a few weeks ago with a cheap scope (BSA Sweet .223)
Here's a target (1 inch squares) after playing around with the scope. 100yards. I was using my cleaning/tool box as a rest. I have not adjusted the harmonic dampener.

I would like an AR but I don't want to have to go to a range to shoot it.

Non-restriced. $1000. It suits my purposes. If I wanted a tack driver I would buy a bolt gun and a better scope.

I have a couple of new .625" contoured 580 series mini-14s (they have a new barrel profile for this year...it is somewhat beefier than the older ones and uses a new gas block to accomodate the thicker barrels)...they all shoot around 2 to 3 inches at 100 with factory ammo. One of them prints about an inch and a half with a 69 grain HPBTM handload.

For what they are I like them quite a bit....a smaller, lighter non-restricted version of my beloved M14 type rifles that cost a fraction to go play with. I like them enough that my most recent project was to make up a bayonet lug/front sight base combo so I can bubba my minis into mini-14gb clones. The prototype just came back from the shop today:

Rather than hijack this thread I'll fire up another one to show off my "new" toys...:)

Any advice for me to get a muzzle brake or compensator for my 580 series Mini14? My rifle has the stainless steel barrel and the front sight looks impossible to remove so I am looking for a brake/compensator that will slip on and pin. Where are these things available? They make slip-ons for the older series of Mini14's but it seems hard to find one for my newer on. Thanks.
