Opinions on the Savage 10FP with Choate stock

I have the opportunity to purchase a used savage 10 FP with a choate stock. The rifle is chambered in .308
I want to know if this rifle would be worth it for under $500. I'm looking for something to get into some longer range shooting 500-1000 yards and was wondering if this would be a good starter. If it didn't shoot well I would most likely order a Shilen barrel from mystic precision.

Opinions please.

I had a 10FP in .223. I replaced the Tupperware with the Choate. It would shoot about an inch with American eagle (I didn't reload at the time). I later sold it .....anyways the guy I sold it was making single odd shaped hole with reloads. I liked the Choate stock for shooting that range or over a gopher patch. It would have been quite heavy for walking though.

In my opinion the stock is more solid then savage`s basic plastic stock, but less solid than the fibreglass ones. At 500 you are getting a great deal of rifle for the money.

It would be difficult to find a better rifle for under $500.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't like the Choate stock, but for $500 you could replace it whenever you wanted and sell it on the EE.

I don't know if there is anything wrong with them, I just don't like them.

If the stock fits you, it will work very well. Just have it properly bedded cause the inletting is huge.

That is what I used to put my 223 out to a mile.

Does the job just fine.
