opinions on Ultimate Alberta Elk gun.

some guys i have talked to about hunting elk.have told me that they bugle them in close within 150 yards or closer and shoot them with there standard calibers . if they place there shot right the animal is down .

I love my .338 Win Mag, but I'd feel good about having a .300 or 7MM mag as well.
Sure you can get away with a .308, 30-06 etc, no problem...but I've yet to see anything walk away after a hit from the .338 FWIW.

It's important to distinguish between hunting bulls in the rut, and hunting bulls/cows after the rut. In most cases, the rut occurs during bow season, and rifle season is well after the rut is over (at least in most areas in AB). If you hunt in a good zone during Sept/early Oct, then you can call them in close, but if you're hunting the standard November rifle season, or late season cows (Dec-Jan), then you probably won't have such luck. In this case, shots can come at whatever range you find them at. As long as you're confident in your abilities, this could be from 15 yards out to as far as you can spot and shoot 'em.

The best Elk gun is one that you can shoot accurately....calibre doesn't really much matter if shot placement suffers.
***** close only counts in hand grenades, horse shoes and atomic bombs***********

Hunted with my 7mm mag for every thing under the southern alberta sun and love it but always pondered the .280 rem just for deer. all and all it comes down to the shooters ability and shot placement . find something that makes you smile after each shot and learn to shoot it well.

.270 or .30-06

Get something you'll practice a lot with and be comfy to shoot. I really like the .270 Win, don't have a lot of hunting experience but know that recoil sucks for accurate shooting. How can you get really good with a rifle if it kicks the snot out of you while you're practicing with it? How can you get really good if it costs $3.00 a round to shoot?

Better a well loved and well shot .270 than a .300 Win Mag you grit your teeth at shooting and put away after 10 rounds.
