I'm thinking of giving up on finding a 243 and just using my 30 06 for wolf hunts. Certainly overkill but wondering what ammo others have used so I don't wreck the hide to badly? I do have a .223 that I have been trying to get rid of for a while but no real serious buyers yet.

Been there done that, it's also the heli cull round of choice. Trust me, .223 works! I voiced lots of scepticism about it years ago but have seen it used enough now I'm a believer. It is absolutely all the is required to put down even the biggest dogs, there really isn't any real improvement on them with a .308 over a .223. Hit in the back end a .308 is superior, but hit in a basketball sized area on the shoulder and they're equal.

I won't disagree on the fact that the .223 is underrated.... It was what I used on my heli hog hunt..... And it dumped quite a few pigs with follow up shots..... And I have no doubt if I had been shooting from a stable position, the results would have been even better... Likely exponentially so....

What I will say, is that CGN is not always the home of the seasoned hunter, and when I see someone wanting a "dedicated" cartridge for their prey, I tend to err on the side of caution.....

I question why the OP can't find a .243..... And since he wants to target wolves, I question why he doesn't want a "wolf gun"....

For coyotes, I have a number of .22 cal and 6mm centerfire rifles to choose from. For wolves, I don't have a dedicated rifle, I just draw one of my deer rifles out, might be a .257 Roberts, .260 Rem, 7X57 or 7mm-08, .308 or maybe a .30/06... but probably from the lower end of that group... with standard deer loads.

Generally I think less time spent on worrying about different calibers, and more time spent on long range marksmanship works out better.
I'm truly amazed when I see people at the range, shoot ten rounds at 100yd, and are pretty happy if half are on the paper, and think their buddy that got a six inch group is a real sharp shooter. And to often this seems to be the norm.
It then becomes the calibers fault when a coyote limps off with a bullet in the guts.

I would use the ought-six with deer bullets. I would think it would be easier on the hide than a 243. My cousin has taken several wolves with Rem 130 grain Accutips in 270, and there was no major hide damage.

Yes.... could not say it better myself.
