Opinions on what 45ACP pistol to get?

My preference for grip size is more towards the Browning High Power and Colt 1911. I've just picked up a S&W 4506 from the family and estate of an old shooting buddy. If you're looking for something that fits a bigger hand, something along that line might be the answer.

Sorry for the newbie question (but hey....everyone was new too at one point), but in what way do you get more?

Look at a glock...turn it around in your hand. Look at it.

Look at an HK. You don't even have to hold it to see the incredible quality and craftsmanship put into these fine firearms.
Same goes for SIG.
Every detail and cut is fantastic. Quality and Reliability are terms invented and perfected by HK and SIG.
Others use those terms in a desperate attempt to steal away their domination in the market place.

Not knocking those brands at all, but Glock used those terms cause its true and time tested by Military and Law Enforcement alike.

While HK and Sig are outstanding firearm but I cannot agree you get more for you paid for or they have good customer service in Canada. STI do have after sale support here but where is HK? Once a while you will see people cry for HK or SIG parts.

I believe Questar can get just about any part for Sigs.

I'm finding myself becoming seduced by the insidious call of the Remington 1911R1:

At $650 at Ellwood Epps, for a NAmerican made .45, I think one may well find its way into my safe!

I would vote against the glock. I had a 21sf and while it was a very soft shooter, the recoil was shockingly light, it felt like I was holding a big hunk of plastic. It just feels cheap, even more so than the g17. I vote for a 1911 or if you want polymer and can afford, it get an hk.

Online very favourable review of the Remington 1911R1

...on the other hand, it's very rare for this guy to find a gun he DOESN'T like...

I've owned a Glock 21 sf for 2 years and have shot thousands of rounds through it and with my large hands, it fits just right. I've tried them all and have always come back to a Glock. Is there a handgun that is easier to field strip, clean and maintain or modify? The accuracy is superb and controllability is excellent, even off hand. Considering the price along with everything mentioned, the inherent value is unmatched by any competitor, but then, it's a Glock and I drink cool-aid. Stay thirsty my friends.

I have, over my 25 years of shooting, tried several .45 platforms.

I am now VERY happy with the S&W M&P .45, as for me, it does it all, with great ergonomics.

I have only limited experience with a few .45's, but I really liked the Glock 21. I shot a Norinco 1911 aswell, but I much preferred the Glock.

Is there anything wrong with the HK compact 45? There seems to be a few popping up in the EE? Is this just coincidence or are these pistols no good?
Thanks
