opinions please on the 358 Win

Would like opinions please on the 358 Win.
For a guy that hand loads.
Purpose would be a compact 250 yard moose, black bear, deer gun.

Set up would be a BLR with low power scope, perhaps VX3 2.5 x 8.

Has the 358 dropped off in popularity?

I own several rifles...... In several calibers........ The one I am missing is a.358 win......

Now, to be honest, this is an "on paper" opinion........ But I love the .308 case....

But I do have experience with big and slow....... And .358 certainly looks to fit the bill........
 
I have owned many .358 rifles... as a matter of fact, I have owned the exact rig you are talking about... eight of my .358's have been various versions of the M77 bolt action... but two have been BLR's. Two tidbits, one; the .358 is a great cartridge to load for and shoot, two; the VX-3 2.5-8X36 is probably my favourite general purpose hunting scope. The .358 Win is very miserly on powder and highly efficient, and not tempermental about loads. I like two bullets in mine, the Nosler 225 Partition on everything other than deer and the Hornady 200 FTX on deer... I have "my" quintessential .358 on the way right now... a Ruger M77 Carbine.

Ya ya..... Rub it in..... (I joke)......

I can't speak from previous experience....... But what I will say is that slow and heavy has a definite place........ And based on my research, the .358 will be a perfect addition for me....... I just need to be picky on platform.........

Actually a ruger 22 was a rifle I owned many years ago.
And seriously should have kept. I have tended to sell on a whim...
So its gentle reminder to really think through both buying and selling guns.

With that handle guys may think I am a kid.
Actually I am retired.
No longer a "wage slave" LOL

Lol..... Fair enough..... ALL my rifles are rugers......... Including my .22....... Wasn't meant as a knock..... :)
 
Like kamlooky said I've never felt under gunned with my 358 win. The blr with a low power scope is also a great gun to shoot off hand and in field shooting positions.
 
My new to me 358Win BLR Lightweight 81 (2003 DOM) arrived in the mail a few days ago. It is in very good condition but a little bit spendy. I've topped it with a VX-3 2.5-8x36 (from Hoytcanon thank you). On the third stop in my quest for factory ammunition I secured 4 boxes of Hornady 200g SP. They were at the Canadian Tire in Renfrew.

Haven't shot it yet so no performance comments but it replaced my 35Rem 336 which was a brilliant rifle/calibre combination.
 
Of all the stupid impulse buys I made with my Visa the one I kick myself over is the one I didn't make

Excuse me while I go kick myself some more.......

I eventually got one but it had done some steroids and wears a weight belt, it's supposed to be called a 350 Remington Magnum but the kids call it the "Whimsy Pink Magnum" long story but captures my weakness for impulse buying....except that one time...Doh!

225gr partitions are super accurate but the 250gr hornadys are one hole accurate....

Do it, you don't want the regret I've had!!!!

I run a pre 81 BLR in .358.
It carries well, shoots better than it has a right too, and digests 200's(my fav), 225's, and 250's very well.
It now wears a vintage Redfield TV screen 1.75-5x scope.
Shots like this at 100 with 200gr. SP Hornady's(low shots were first shots with new scope)


Kills stuff like this very well.

Handloading for the 358 is a must. Brass is easy if you use 308.

Perfect but a VX3 1.5 x5 would be my first choice in the lowest mounts you can find. The comb on the BLRs are quite low.

It never was widely popular but an excellent choice nonetheless.

Speaking of periods when is yours done?..... Life is too short to be angry all the time....

What I simply meant is that I have no particular experience with the .358 itself, but do with slow and heavy cartridges and they have their place.....

My brother in law had a surplus mauser that had been rebarrelled to 358Win. It was stupid accurate(he shot it out to 600yds). He had it turned into a 35Belted Newton(358 Norma Mag with a posh name) with some custom stockwork etc. He's regretted it ever since. All my experience with people not having a 358Win is Stories of Woe and Tales of Regret. Life's to short not to have one or two or three.

Did you buy it yet????
