opinions please on the 358 Win

At close range a slow lumbering bigger bored cartridge causes much less meat damage..... And from what I have seen, carries much more knockdown power ...... for me, cartridge choice depends on terrain, game and anticipated shot distance..... Horses for courses.....

I have never been in one single solitary hunting scenario where I thought a slower bullet would have been superior. Not one, and I've been in a few.

Slow/heavy "momentum"loads have a DEFINITE place in my arsenal.
Slow and heavy got the job done for many years and with good results. I use 180s in my 308 Carbine.

Think round nose 220gr/30-06, 175gr/7x57, 160gr/6.5x55. These and many others have a great reputation for effective & lethal penetration.

Maybe so, but a slower bullet will have less recoil and can generally be shot with more accuracy without and fear of the incoming pain or from a lighter rifle.
I know I shoot my 45/70 better with lighter loads than with 400 gr jacketed slobberknockers.

And by and large completely outdated.

Effective and lethal penetration is not completely outdated.

There are lots of hunting situations where slower is fast enough esp hunting here in the east. I would not trade my 257Roberts for a 257WBY for hunting deer here in NB.

And I have never been in a sub 150 yard situation where I felt I needed a blistering hot small pill..... And I have watched many bear and deer react to a faster than needed 30 cal (and sometimes less), and many react to a slow moving larger cal......

Given the choice in a short yardage situation, I will take the pickup truck over the Ferrari any day....... Both will do the job, but IMOP, I have seen the truck do it better most times.......

The problem is, I have shot deer at 15' and over 450 yds with the same load in the 280 Remington with 140 gr bullets at 3000 fps. You will struggle to do the same with what you are saying has a definite niche. In theory a rifle collector has an argument. In practice a hunter knows better.

Here is my little 358, a Ruger Frontier w / 16.5 " barrel.
Amazing groups with a 225 any brand bullet for such a stubby barrel.

That's a damned fine little rifle. I'd swap out the rings for a lower set, but that's me. Either way, that'd be a sweet-carrying little thumper. And all that in spite of the fact that it's not a 9.3.
