opinions please on the 358 Win

When I leave to go hunting in the morning I can't choose where and how long my shots will be. A rifle that will kill at 450 yds has zero problem killing at 15'. The reverse is not true in this case.

Then maybe a .358 isn't for you....... Doesn't mean it should be written off for everybody...... I can tell you when I go tree stand hunting whitetails in the hardwoods or bear hunting over bait that I won't be getting a shot over 100 yards..... A slow moving big bore is a great killing machine in these scenarios and doesn't ruin a whack of meat....... And while you are correct that your 450 yard rifle will kill in my scenario it is my experience that the bigger bore at short range has better knock down power.....

Must be the angle of the photo...rings look high. But the bolt does still need to open, you can't argue that.

Even though you aren't keen on the 9.3, I still like ya!

This is my current 9.3, last build by my Brother before we lost him.
Its a very nice build and stock has to be seen to be appreciated, he was trying to finish the metalwork in his dying days but didn't quite make it so for me its very special.
It is a very accurate rifle as are most of his works..

It is...... But the 450 Chuck mentioned is a long stretch....... And I don't think the .358 is the best tool for long range.....

That's far beyond my comfort zone and if I cannot stalk to a closer point... oh well, there will always be another chance.
300 yds. and under is where I am comfortable regardless of whether I'm carrying my 28 Nosler or the whatever.
The rifle I'm carrying may well reach but that's about it.

300 is my max as well.... And even that is limited to the right conditions, the main one being having a good rest or comfortable shooting position.....

The 358 makes a great moose,/deer .round depending on where and how you hunt . Up here in the Yukon where the majority of moose are taken inside 250yds, it's perfectly in its element .will most reasonable rounds do the same thing.. Including faster rounds ofcourse . But if it brings you joy carrying a 358 in your hands then that's reason enough , hell if you want to carry a 458 win for deer, that's reason enough. If you hunt out to 250yds, . Good choice

This bull was shot at 350 yds (just over actually). It was shot with a fast stepping 7mm magnum and he was shot at a steeply quartering on angle. The bullet went nearly through him lengthways and a quick follow up dropped him in his tracks. I could have killed him at point blank range and the results would have been similar. Like I said. If you want to collect a 358 Win be my guest. But you are not filling a necessary niche. I'm sorry if that opinion is offensive to some. But it is what it is.

Nice moose.....

My experience is that same shot taken at point blank range with a 7mm would indeed yield the same result..... Only with a lot more wasted meat....

Your opinion isnt offensive in the least....... The fact that you seem to feel that you are the only one with experience and feel the need to discount everyone else's while writing us all off as non hunting internet experts on the other hand......

The 28Nosler is about king of the heap for 7mm fast these days ...... Assuming that you are using a 7mmRemMag, why would you limit yourself with the outdated Remington version?

300 win comes moose hunting as a backup rifle or if I decide I'm going to sit on an exceptionally large cut block. 35 Whelen is going to see all the action.
In the bush in griz country I'll take the 35 every time.
Also, I don't shoot quartering animals. I'll wait for a better angle or the next animal.
Killing something just to throw half the meat in the garbage is just disrespectful to me, which is another reason for the 35 over the 300 at 300yds and under.
Then again, I've seen guys puposely shoot game through the front shoulders and then ##### to the butcher at how little they got back.

Here is another, this one is interesting.
Its a 375 / 06 Imp. but not the Ackley version.
He designed the reamer and had CH Tool & Die make the dies.
A tad shorter than the Ackley variation it is a bit more blown out and still has a sharp shoulder.
Fireform loads land under the inch and recoil is ' noticeable ', according to his notes it is not far behind a 375 CT although I cannot vouch for that.

Chuck, that's a nice Moose in post # 72 and I commend you for your proficiency, excellent shot.
But I must ask... why such a grim expression ? Not looking forward to the work ahead in the cold ?
Lighten up, life is too short to be unhappy all the time !
