opinions please on the 358 Win

When I leave to go hunting in the morning I can't choose where and how long my shots will be. A rifle that will kill at 450 yds has zero problem killing at 15'. The reverse is not true in this case.

Quoted for truth. I wouldn't hunt a cartridge that had a 300y max range. The .358 would have a pretty lonely life living in my safe.

Fair statement....... But you didn't say why...... Is 300 plus something available to you?...... You don't share your location..... Where I would use a .358, I woukd be lucky to see 150...... And the .358 is perfect for that....... It's all relative......

I certainly don't want to send a 28 nosler through a bear or whitetail at 30 yards.....

Why? Do you think the 28 will bounce off? Or is this one of these "meat damage" concerns that are easily addressed by bullet selection, shot placement and trimming a bit of meat?

I've shot bear and deer under 30 yards with bullets going 3500fps and they didn't destroy excess meat.

I prefer hunting to shooting... the .358 is a dandy hunting cartridge.

Oh nice, because I'm constantly presented with shots past 250-300 I'm not a hunter. (Just got back from touring around, saw a whitetail buck and a muley buck, both in the 300,400 range.)

There's a reason the Gunstores aren't full to the brim with .358, let me guess...everyone else is doing it wrong?

The .28 nosler will not bounce off Clarke...... We both know that..... But it will rip though at a ridiculously unnecessary speed, and yes it will cause unnecessary meat damage........ It will also fail on expand properly at short range etc..... I could go on....... But I won't, because i see where you want to take this........

Get your head out of where YOU hunt.... A lot of us are not constantly presented by that shot and have to work to get that much closer........ He isn't knocking you, he is giving his opinion.....

Maybe just tell us about why it will fail "on" expand properly at short range? Or is that some sort of typo?

Seems to me that the 358s that do find their way to the used section in gunstores and here on the EE do sell quite fast while they are chock full of 270 and 300 WSMs that just are not selling.

all the medium bores are good. I like the 338 fed, 338 06 and 325. also have a whelen. have had 358 in a blr and found the rifle not the cartridge not to my liking. one day when I find the right rifle I will have another 358 in the stable.

Based on my experience at short yardage I can give stories of many cartridges failing to do a bang flop when I wanted them to.......

How many do you want?

I can also regale you with stories of how I ripped a fast moving small bore through a deer and got bloodshot meat as a reward.....

If you are speaking only of perfect broadside shots through the ribs into the vitals, then good for you....... In that case the cartridge is irrelevant and not worth arguing since you have already theoretically made the Shot.......

So you get looks at game a ways out, then you stalk in and get within what? 10-50 yards? Then you let em have it with the medium bore? Why not just take a bow?

And you and Hoyt are constantly "knockin" anyone with a different view. My opinion is I want more that 1500-1600fps on game at 250y.

Hoyt is his own man..... We don't always agree..... Get that straight.....I speak for me, hoyt speaks for Hoyt........

I pick a cartridge based on my hunt....... Nothing more nothing less.......... And when I pick a slow moving big bore, it's because it will yield the best results IMOP....

If there is a chance I will "get a look at game a ways out", I pick something different.

Do you think they didn't bang flop because they didn't expand due to the close range? Is that what you meant about fail on properly expand?

Would like opinions please on the 358 Win.
For a guy that hand loads.
Purpose would be a compact 250 yard moose, black bear, deer gun.

Set up would be a BLR with low power scope, perhaps VX3 2.5 x 8.

Has the 358 dropped off in popularity?

GREAT Choice - I have a BLR 358 Win with a 2-7 Redfield Reveloution Scope and Leupold QD rings ! I load it with Sierra 225 gr SPBT over H4895 powder ! It shoots 3-5 shots into 1-1.5" all the time ! RJ

Yes and to be honest.... Regardless of all myths etc, I have found the fast movers, even the "lowly" .308, left deer at less than 50 yards to continue grazing until they realized they were dead...... While 12 gauge slugs and a 50 cal muzzleloader picked up a deer and deposited it dead in a new zip code.........
