opinions please on the 358 Win

Thank you Superbrad and Gatehouse. Is there any good rifle in that caliber with iron sights?

Thought on a marlin 336 in 356? (basically the same as 358 but with a rim.)

Had a choice a few years back to buy a Miroku "gold trigger" 81' BLR in either .308 Win or .358 Win.
Chose the .308 Win because of a much greater choice in both factory ammo and reloading components.
Can't remember the last time I saw a box of .358 Win ammo on store shelves that are literally covered with .308 Win ammo in the fall.
Just about every manufacturer makes ammo and components for the .308 Win.
The BLR in .308 Win has killed every animal I aimed it at including a bull moose at over 425 yards.
I made the right choice.

OP for the the range your talking about a BLR with a low magnification scope would work great. I've hunted with mine from coastal thick stuff to large clear cuts in the south cariboo and have yet to feel under gunned. For me the range of the 358 matches up with my own personal range limit. But that's just my preference

If you only wanted "one" gun you made the right choice... if you don't reload you made the right choice... if I only had one rifle and didn't reload I would make the same choice you did and select the .308 over the .358... but I have many rifles and I do reload and I am happy to have rifles in both cartridges... several .308's and a couple .358's actually.

The "one gun" and "don't reload" parameters do nothing to invalidate the cartridge itself, in this day and age, it takes 30 seconds to jump online and order a case of .358 rounds... but of course, at a higher price point than .308 loads... but, thankfully, I am also not a college student or starving artist.

I think the .358 has been very disparaged by too many people. An older hunter I knew used it with great success on deer, beer, and moose at short and mid ranges. Say 300- ish yards. That is longer than most opportunities where I hunt. I finally picked up a mint Savage 99 then another FW in the same caliber. Had no problems finding 400 rounds of Hornady ammo for less than $45/box, and now reloading and playing with bullets.

I need to see a moose or deer to shoot. I sure the .358 will seal the deal.

Thats a good one. It reminds me of one of the funnier things I read on gunnutz: It was when, in response to people complaining about its high cost, a fellow said that the .17HMR was not a good caliber for guys on welfare.

Ha ha too true - that's a really nice rifle you have, then again I'm a sucker for a full stock....

I have read this hole thing, and as a big .358 fan, I have to add loading the 158 XTP pistol bullet to around 2700 proves to be a good large pest killer.
