Ok.. so anyone have any thoughts on this?

My interests with my next gun are a max range capable of 1,000 yards. Near match grade shooting, but I really only shoot for fun, I don't reload, so as good as you can get by just experimenting with factory stuff. I may get into reloading with this next rifle though. I want something good. Keep as much of the OEM stuff without going full custom build. I would likely send it to get work done.
 
I have a very similar rifle built, but without the uberghey triangular barrel. IMHO that rifle is wayyyyyy overpriced!!! (read butt-raped overpriced)

buy a savage 10fp,
or if you really must have a Remington buy an SPS Varmint and order that stock for around 500$ from the states.
 
You could buy a new VTR and a 5R and a BC stock for slightly more than what they are charging for one rifle that is a hybrid of all 3.

Price-wise this gun is far greater than the sum of all its parts. It looks tacticool, but it is hugely over-priced and shoots no better than any other average Remington. Zey: It does not matter what you spend on a factory gun, they all shoot the same. If you are using factory ammo, just buy something you can live with and have fun. Shoot out the factory barrel and invest the money you have in a good scope. When you are taking things to the next level with reloading, get a match barrel.

Too bad Remongton doesn't have a "no barrel option" on their firearms. The tobelrone barrel idea is just plain horrible. Savage must rub their hands together with every new abomination Remington produces.

If you really want to spend this sort of money, consider a Tikka tactical or a Savage F-Class rifle.
 
For your purposes the Savage would be tough to beat. Not long ago there was an article in Precision Shooting magazine that underscored this. A small Sheriff's department was looking to purchase a scoped rifle for a dedicated rifleman but they didn't have the budget for a custom rifle or even a top end Remington 700. They bought a Savage (I don't recall which model) put a good Leupold scope on it, and this guy cleaned up at the State sniper matches. Of course to do so he was a talented marksman, but the point is that his Savage was competitive against the big dollar rifles.

If you intend to use the rifle frequently you are going to have look at handloading. Purchasing quantities of factory match ammo is only affordable for governments. A handloading set up to produce accurate ammo doesn't need to be expensive or complex, and you can use a Workmate for a bench if you don't have much room. You would recover the cost very quickly.
 
Boomer is correct, and infact the Savage F class rigs in 6mmBR 6.5x284 and FTR 308 are infact competative out of the box even in internationaly.

Team savage has cleaned up in this division even over 4-5K rigs

Cuz of my experience with Remington.....I would never get anything else from them..Muybe personal Shaver or set of Pocket tools, but not gun...

So, what was the final result after having contacted Le Baron? Did the rifle get sent away for warranty repair?
 
It's mostly the response I was expecting. I have an 870 and a 700 SPS Tactical in .223 and they both work perfectly so I have no hard feelings about Remington products.

I like the option part availability of aftermarket products, service and knowledge concerning the 700 action. But yes, they really don't give this rifle away ~$2,000!

I may have to build a custom rifle... The trick is, I don't know much about all this shooting stuff. On a really good day I'll make a 5 shot 2" group out at 300 yards with my 223 and then pretty much do a back flip I'm so impressed with myself. I think someone who doesn't know much about the sport really shouldn't be building a custom match rifle.... mostly a waste of money. I'm not interested in photocopy factory guns though. I like to be unique.
 
A 5r with a aftermarket trigger and a A-5 Mcmillian stock would make a fine rifle. Not a huge price difference from what Remington wants for the target tactical. Guess you are paying for the cool tactical name...

You could get a 5r leave it factory and still have money for a decent scope for the price of the target tactical.
