Is it just me or are the revolvers the S&W Custom Shop turning out butt ugly? I'm talking about the 686 & 629 that they cut & contour the full underbarrel lug into something reminiscent of an old Remington cap & ball revolver or the current Ruger cap & ball??? I love the 629/686 but those sure aren't my cup of tea! What do you guys think?

I find the grips on the custom shop 686's and 629'ers to be too short for my hands. I don't like the look of the scope rails either since I wouldn't want a scope on a revolver either but that's just me. I'm guessing they make those guns for hunters. I do however wish I could get my hands on a 686 Steath Hunter. They stopped making them a few years ago but they sure look cool to me.

As mentioned, they have to keep up with the times, and as everything ugly is fashionable (look at the new cars), they have to build ugly guns. Kidding. Sort of. Maybe. - dan

Compare that 629 from the Custom Shop that's for sale in the EE (No Offense to the seller!:D ) to that 6" Colt Python you sold what was it? Last week? One is a thing of beauty, the other I would guess is a working tool. I'll leave you guys to decide which is which! :D Not slamming the guys who like the custom shop guns, and in terms of function, I'm sure they work top notch, but why can't they make 'em "purty?":D

I looked at the 627 and 686 last week, determined to get the 627 but couldn't justify the extra expense based on overall feel (as the nice young man would barely let me hold both but that's another (Lever Arms) story). I ordered the 686 from another dealer and shot it yesterday for the first time. I love the gun but the Hogue grips are a bit to narrow and small for me and I don't have large hands. Also as posted in another thread I have to do some polishing work on hammer and trigger as they came quite discolored and I attribute this as S&W not paying attention to detail in quality control. I like the 6" full underlug barrel and it's identical to a 4" 1989 one posted in the other thread.

That being said there was a shooter at the range yesterday with a Python so blue it was almost black and it would almost take your breath away (If you'll pardon the expression). If I could find a NIB one like that I might have to dip into the sock one more time.....

I know what you mean! I had a new, unfired 8" Royal Blue Python sitting in my safe for 6 years...I didn't have the heart to fire it. In a classic bonehead move I decided to sell it and use the money to buy something that I would actually shoot! Its right at the top of my list of guns I'll always regret selling! I had the original box and paperwork with it as well! You couldn't ask for a smoother, sweeter action.

As for the Custom Shop S&W...the shaved underbarrel lug is a definite turn-off for me too. It definitely takes away from the look of the revolver.
