Mid-January I'll be in the market for a new pump action 12ga. I'm down to 3 models; Remington 870 Express Magnum, Weatherby PA-08 and Winchester SXP Field. Primary purpose will be clay targets and Upland Hunting. Which would you choose and why?

The Classic Remington 870 Wingmaster.

Sure as autumn arrives, the Model 870 Wingmaster® rises to meet another day in the upland fields and woods of America. The Model 870 is so smooth and reliable that today – nearly 60 years after its introduction – it’s still the standard by which all pump shotguns are measured. With a receiver machined from a solid billet of steel, it is the model of enduring strength. True to its original design, the pump glides with silky surety on two twin action bars for the utmost in positive chambering and ejection. These characteristics, along with its flawless balance and natural pointing qualities have made the Model 870 the best-selling, most trusted shotgun of all time – of any action type, from any manufacturer. As the most aesthetically refined representative of our prestigious pump-action family, the Model 870 Wingmaster is a true American icon.

Available in 12 gauge 2 3/4" and 3", 20 and 28 gauge, and .410 bore, it has a custom-quality finish and handsome American walnut woodwork. The receiver and barrel are richly blued and highly polished for classic appeal. We also offer a broad selection of barrel and choke options to fit your application.
Key Features:
*Remarkable reliability and durability
*The smoothest pump action shotgun on the market
**Superior balance, handling and looks
**Points, swings and functions better than anything else in its class
*The highly polished and richly blued receiver is milled from a solid billet of steel for the ultimate in rugged dependability
**A wide array of barrel and choke options make versatility a Wingmaster® hallmark
***Twin-action bars for non-binding action
*Available in standard 12 gauge 2 3/4" and 3", 20, 28 gauge and .410 bore

Save your money a little longer and buy one of these fine Shotguns, you'll never regret it for years to come.
Yes, I have a thing for the Wingmaster and there are just but a few of Good reasons to own one.
Best Regards,
Rob

A longstanding gun company should be factored in your decision, and than it's all about the fit. When it fits and feels sweet, than you found you shotgun.

Thank you Irish and Winchested. Fit is so essential in shotgun, yet it seems to be an overlooked consideration these days. A rifle will let you get away with poor fit, but when a shotgun fits poorly the only thing that gets away is the birds.

Remington Model 870

I purchased a new Remington model 870 express in 20 ga. yesterday because I wanted another one to enjoy. No photo yet but it has a 26" barrel & weighs in at 6-1/4 lb.
Right now until the end of December Remington even has a mail-in rebate of $30.

I have been using my 870 Special Field (5-1/2 lb., 21" barrel) in the same gauge for the last 25 yrs, & has been the greatest little shotgun to me, never ever an issue with it!

I wanted to stay with the same brand because I'm used the the controls & love the 20 ga., & can use my other chokes & ammo.

My vote obviously goes with the Remington 870, in which ever flavor & ga. you like. They are good value for the money, as far as I'm concerned....

Edited to add photo of the new one...

The 870 wingmaster is my shotgun of choice, fits well and works every time. Kicking my butt for passing up a 12ga 2 3/4" model recently, would have matched the 20ga in the gun cabinet.

+1 on the wingmaster.. When I was looking at shotguns there was no comparison. The express will do the trick, but the wingmaster is an absolutely beautiful piece.. I have my wingmaster with hardwood stock and a 26" barrel for skeet/trap and I have an ex-armoured car wingmaster with 18" barrel and synthetic furniture for bushwhacking and abusing.

Accept no substitute.

If you are looking at $400 shotguns than I would take either the Weatherby or the Winchester (probably the Winchester) over the 870. I used to have an 870 express and I have a friend with one and the 2 of them just jam. I have also seen 2 - 870's at clays and its the same thing, jam. What can I say, I have personally seen 4 -870's at work its always the same thing, jam. Basically they are a low quality version of a very good gun. I have seen the high quality version of the 870 at clays and the 870 Wingmaster was flawless in performance and you could really see the quality in it but that's a $700 gun. If you are stepping up to the $700 mark than look at the Benelli Supernova as well. The Nova has a bit of a bad rap but the Supernova dos not. I have a Supernova and I simply love this gun.

id go Winchester for shure excellent gun and for the fit issues the Winchester is very versatile it comes with spacers for length cast and comb adjustment so it will fit most very well with the option to adjust for skeet to trap shooting differences
I got the chance to shoot one a lot on a demo day and a very soft nice swinging 12 pump
I doubt you would be upset with the purchase
just don't expect to get a rifle barrel for it for a decent price down the road you will be better to buy a new gun
and they take browning chokes

none ... I would only consider a wingmaster or a bps pump. I dont like the express models and I own 3 gauges of bps pumps and I feel they are the best NEW pump shotguns. As for old pump shotguns, I love model 12 winchesters.

Of the three you listed I would go with the Remington Model 870.My first pick however for a new pump action shotgun would be an Ithaca Model 37.
