I posted a thread here the other day, and typed it out as if I was looking to buy a pistol, when in actuality, I just wanted opinions on some guns I'm looking at. I want to start shooting production IPSC and some IDPA and am looking for a 9mm pistol for this purpose. I have narrowed it down to either the Glock 17, which I am a little bit familiar, and the CZ SP-01, which I have never seen up close. I like CZ, and have owned a few. I still have a CZ TS for IPSC Standard division. I would like to hear from anyone who owns either a G17, or a SP-01 and get some thoughts on which direction I should go. Locally, the G17 is $595.00, while the SP-01 is $795.00. Quite a difference. Is it worth it? Thanks for the help.

Re:

I use the SP01 Decock version for IPSC production. I had it for 6 months now (my choices were G17 & SP01 as well). The CZ is a great gun although I did have some FTE problems in the beginning (first 500 rounds). But after changing to some lighter CZ springs the problem went away. One benefit of using the CZ is that you can exchange some parts from other CZ’s, such as springs, sights, extended mag release, trigger, etc...

The G17 is also a fine firearm for IPSC and/or IDPA which is why I bought one last Sunday from Target Sport (G17s with night sights were on sale).

So my suggestion is buy both or try both and shoot IPSC with the one that you shoot better with.

Ideally try out both before making a decision, or at least hold both. It's tough to make an informed decision otherwise. That being said, I was shooting a G22 for a while which is the same frame etc. as a G17. My wife now has a CZ SP01 for production so I've shot both side by side a few times. The trigger on the CZ is far better than the Glock, especially after you change the springs. I like them both but I if I were going to buy a new production gun for myself and didn't have the G22 then I think the CZ would win.

I ran a Glock 17 (1986 manufacture) in IPSC from 02 to 05 and switched to an SP-O1 and then got a Shadow after putting 10,000 rds on the SP-O1.
Kept the first SP-O1 as a backup and still have the G17 too.
All are grest pistols and the trigger is nicer on the CZ guns.
Go with whatever feels and shoots best for you.

I am left handed. I liked the contols on the Glock. It was easier for me to operate than other models.

But having said that I would recommend that you buy the gun that feels best in your hand. That will result in a higher comfort level, more Alphas, and quicker times.

PS... I shoot a G17.

I have two Glock17's and two SP01 Shadows and a few other guns as well. The glocks are high mileage and they are the only guns I've owned that never jam or break parts. If I had to rely on only one gun it would be the glock but I like the CZ's too even though I've broken slide stops and extractors and had some ejection problems. If someone asks me what to buy I always say Glock 17.

I shot a Glock in competition for years and was quite happy with it. It never malfunctioned ever! That includes shooting a bunch of horrible lead reloads. If I could squeeze it into the mag, it went bang! I have since gone to the CZ SP-01 and I am happy with it. Initially, I had some issues with the SP-01, a broken slide stop at 12,000 rds and a broken trigger spring at 15,000 rds. I also had intermittent failures, a jam about once every 100rds. Initially I was not very impressed with the SP-01’s at all, I pretty much thought they were Junk! An unbelievable reliable Glock probably spoiled me, but keep in mind all Glocks are not that reliable. I went back to the Glock but soon found out I could not shoot them as well as the CZ’s. For me the CZ’s are really comfortable, point able and generally the most accurate production class of firearms. Almost all the top production guys are using them or one of their clones.

I know feel different concerning the CZ’s. I have a slide stop that I have marked just for matches. I put it in the gun previous to the match and take it out after the match and I use a second slide stop for practice. I think this is actually a week point in the design of the 75 series and their clones. I mentioned this to Angus Hobdell during the Nationals last summer and he implied that it was actually a consumable part. It was like changing the oil in your car every 5,000 km. He believes you should change your slide stop every 10,000 rds. He does this and says he has yet to break a slide stop. He fires about 80,000 rds a year! I guess if you can scrape up the money to shoot 10,000 rds you can scrape up $25.00 for a slide stop.

There were some issues with earlier trigger springs, mine was one of them, it broke and I replaced it fairly easily. The importer is a great guy, Dave at London arms. I sent him the spring and the slide stop and he replaced them free of charge under warranty. So there is great service from the importer.

The last issue I had with the gun was intermittent jams. I turns out it was my grip on the pistol that was causing it. I shoot left handed and my left thumb sometimes blocked the ejection port. I change my grip just after purchasing the pistol. That was the cause.

Over all I am very satisfied with the SP-01 and would recommend it highly. If I were to buy another pistol I would get the Shadow as it has all the “Bell’s & Whistle’s” so to speak. I own several CZ firearms, rifles and pistols and I can they are all very accurate, very reliable guns and excellent value for the money. Just my $0.02

Thank you all for your replies. I am leaning towards the Glock 17 right now actually. I find it really cool that most of you have owned both pistols. My reasons for this are simple. It's a little cheaper, which is nice. The difference in price is enough for the extra mags, the mag pouches, and a holster. Ok, not a super nice holster, but I have always liked Fobus products. They are pretty solid and are decently priced. A friend of mine is also a certified Glock armorer, and if any problems did arise, he's someone I could talk to. I really like my CZ TS, but Glock's really do fit my hand well, and it's just nice to have something totally different. Heck, it sounds like I've made up my mind already, lol. Well, once again, thanks for the input. I'm looking forward to getting out again and shooting something new and different. I'll drop a thread on here in the next couple of weeks after I've picked up whatever I end up with. Have a good one all.
