S&W or Glock are both great choices, not really that expensive and the companies stand behind what they produce. Personally, I really like the M&P's (picking up my second one today), as
I've never owned a Glock I don't have an informed opinion of them - but their popularity speaks volumes. As for the calibre, I think the 9mm is a great cartridge, it's easy to shoot and it's
price and availability are the best. What ever you decide... ENJOY. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go change my underwear... ;)
 
As of yet I havent been able to get my greasy hands on a siq.

Albeit the SW SD9VE I held I did fall in love with. But.That may have been cause it was two-tone. I am not restricting myself to just this one purchase and them im done
This is just off the bat. I am a low income earner and I have a budget around $1,000/year for new acquisition's and I can spend about $150/mo in ammo. So Buy something this year and then something else next year. Most likely a Ruger Redhawk .357 next year, my wife is getting her Rpal and absolutely loves that gun, i.e she expects it as her present when her license comes in.

Im more of a semi-auto fan boy the revol ers dont really tickle my famcy
 
I vote quality every time. But only you know what kind of person your are. If you are always on the hunt for a good deal and like a bargain, you might be totally happy with some less expensive shooters. Lots of guys are and that is fine. If you like to upgrade your gear and wonder what the next level brings in terms of refinement, quality and accuracy, just go for the good one right off the top.
 
I am going to swim against the current and reccomend that you get a few cheaper guns.

Get a norinco sig 226 copy, norinco 1911, and a norinco cz75 copy, or a cheap polymer gun like a m&p. Shoot them all and find out what works for you. Learn what you like and dislike in a gun and which you shoot best with.

After you have knowledge of what your tastes are, sell those norincos you bought used off of the EE, back on the EE for basically what you had paid for them. And you can now go buy a quality gun of your preffered type.

Why buy a glock if your not sure if you would maybe prefer the less recoil of a metal gun. Why buy a cz75 if you maybe prefer striker fire guns.

Learn first, then make your quality purchase. I've owned about every major handgun i can think of, and now i have vast knowledge of what works for me and what doesn't, and I've only kept the best of what works.

Start cheap and learn.

Agree 100%. Every .22lr ,rifle or hand gun we have, has seen more rounds through them then any other firearm. When I bought my first 1911 I debated buying the .22 conversion kit, worth every penny it gets used constantly. Even with the lack of supply and silly prices it's still the cheapest way to shoot.
 
Do you want to shoot ipsc or idpa one day? If yes, buy glock s&w or an sp01. I'd recommend the sp01. Full length internal rails, awesome trigger, minimal recoil. If it's just for fun, nothing wrong with a norinco.

I disagree with a 22lr. I've used airsoft for learning to shoot. It doesn't train how to handle recoil, but it is great for improving marksmanship. A 22lr does not train recoil either.
 
Norinco makes some great stuff and they make some that is so poorly fitted that it's garbage. The problem is that a good one is typically resting next to a bad one in the very same shipment. As a result of being burned once by a Norinco I will now only buy one if I can inspect the actual one I'm looking to buy before putting the money down. Of course such a plan assumes that we know what to look for in terms of critical fits and how to evaluate those fits.

I will suggest this. Make yourself a game plan for the near future. Likely as not it won't survive long but it's nice to at least start out in that direction.

Handguns are superb fun... for a while. Then simply standing and perforating paper gets old. So my advice is to look into the various handgun matches to be found in your area and visit a few of them. It may be that something clicks just right and you get into IPSC or IDPA. Or maybe modern "black" 3 gun is your thing. Or perhaps you'll find that you want to buy a stetson and go cowboy action shooting. Or there may be some other handgun competitions in your area that tickle your interest. But however you do it I would suggest you buy handguns at least somewhat based on these events and after a bit of solo target practice you join the fun.
 
Big hands - get a Beretta 92, Sig 226, CZ75 Shadow (or whatever they are calling them nowadays).

Small/Medium hands - good 1911, Sig SP2022, CZ75b w/thin grips, Sig 239/220 (single stack grips) or 226 w/E2 grips.

Personally I don't like Glock or S&W polymer duty guns, but tons of people do. Hard to say what you will like and will shoot well. Lots of trial and error here.
 
because its so close to summer break and they want to pass in a couple of months. I got a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm and a Smith and Wesson SD9VE also lol. Hopefully it passes soon so I don't have to deal with that ATT crap

Picked up a glock, have owned them... Not a big fan.
 
Buy one quality gun. But I guess that's up to you. I have a friend who is a cheap turd and is happy owning turds, won't shell out more then a few hundred for any gun. I appreciate quality and buy quality firearms, not worth it to save a couple hundred dollars and not be happy with it.
 
Someone mentioned the Sig Pro - this has to be the most under rated handgun in North America, but are very popular in Europe. Also the M&P range kit is an very good deal, and Gen 3 Glocks are available at a decent price.
 
Thanks again for all the input guys. Now im doing the 1911 vs everything else. My buddy thinks im an idiot cause i find a 1911 has more curb appeal, he feels newbs will have issues with cleaning properly and they are a tad less reliable and generally shoot .45.acp whereas 9mm is cheaper.

I am really looking at a lot of options so new ones come on the table every day lol but big contenders are (in order of preference as its sits right this second)
SIG Sauer 1911 STX 2-Tone Pistol 45acp
CZ SP-01 9mm
Beretta 92FS Inox Pistol

So second question would you recommend a 1911 for a newb? also damnit people now i have to go look at these shooting competition groups and see if im even remotely interested in it lol! I wonder if any of these 3 are eligible for them lol

You can buy a 1911 in 9mm... The best of both worlds!

freedomventures.ca looks to still have some STI Spartans in 9mm in stock. These are a fine gun at a decent price.

The 1911 may not be the *ideal* platform to learn how to shoot, but I wouldn't be overly concerned. I learned to shoot a handgun and started with a 1911. It worked out OK.

And if you decide to shoot IPSC, the Spartan is an excellent choice. You should note that Kelowna has a pretty good group of competitive shooters, so there will be opportunities to learn from experienced shooters.
