I am thinking about getting a basic 06 as a spare hunting rifle. I don't want to spend a lot and the Mossberg ATR's look priced right. ( Not the new tricked out ones they are offering now )

Does anyone have any direct experience with these in terms of accuracy, feeding, and mechanical durability. The reviews in the magazines are favourable but I take those with a grain of salt. I remember a review that said the 710 was a great rifle. I'd like some real reviews. I know these are no Sako but this is will be a back up gun in case my ruger goes down during the season.

My criteria is the gun has to be able to knock down 5 for 5 of the pigs at 300M for a hunting gun with no feeding problems. ( Assuming there is room for 5 in the magazine ) If it can't do this I don't want it.

I had one in 30-06, that was fairly accurate. 1" to 1.5" at 100. The trigger was creepy. It fed better than my Stevens models did. Demanding that it will knock down 5 out of 5 at 300m, may be expecting too much for an econo rifle, it very well may though. I think that will depend on you more than the rifle.

I have had one for about a year now. When I bought it I was looking for a first rifle. I was torn between the ATR and a Stevens. Went with the ATR cause it was a little cheaper. I have been very happy with it. I don't think the trigger is all that spectacular but its ok. It feeds well. The stock is ok. A little flexible at the tip but really not bad. I have had alot of success with accuracy. Mine can and will group almost everything just over an inch. Last week I shot an inch at 200yards with a 180gr Federal factory cheapy load. The guys at the range were a little surprised. Especially when I told them it was a 300 dollar gun. I'd like to get into handloads and see how it does. I would really recomend it.

I handled one once, so my experience is limited. I found the stock a little too "gumby-esqe" if you will. I only shot a few rounds off-hand from that rifle, so I can't comment on accuracy. On a positive note, at least it isn't a 710.
