Hi guys,

I've been searching on here for information about mounting an optic on my AR. As the title says, it has a fixed handle. I shoot it over open sights but the eyes aren't what they used to be and I was thinking of adding an optic. The obvious choice is an ACOG as they already have an integrated mount. I was also considering a Leupold VX-R Patrol. Any suggestions and/or info would be appreciated.

There are bases that attach to the carrying handle to which pretty much any optic may be mounted.
An extremely high line of sight is the price to be paid.
If you want to use an optic, you would be better off to switch to a flat top upper.

Colt makes (or made) a scope for the carry handle, there's a knockoff from BSA aswell.

ARMS makes a decent picatinny adapter, but as mentioned you start getting really tall using multiple pieces.

There are step mounts... been happy with one like this on a fixed carry handle upper using a red dot. Little side rails come off and the carry handle section has a channel to use the irons.

Yup
This is what I use on my vintage Colt SP1

And on this Norc reproduction vintage AR I built I had a copy of the Colt scope
