Optic for first AR

Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x20. It retails for around $300 in Canada. I have the discontinued VX-Hog 1-4x20 on my AR and it's great. The Pig Plex reticle isn't bad. Another option in the same line is the VX-Freedom AR; I have the 3-9x40 with their TMR (mil) reticle. The AR version also comes in a 1.5-4x20. I'm kind of a Leupold fan boy but I also use Japanese-made Bushnells like the Elite 3500. Which is being discontinued in favour of their Chinese-made lineup... not cool.

If distance is up to 200m, a red dot + magnifier will be a lot of fun. You can occasionally find an Eotech combo on the EE for $1000. Super clear glass and precise 1 moa dot.

A red dot isn't a good choice for 100-200m. A magnifier would be an improvement. But it is a solution to a problem that need not exist.
If a red dot is desired, get a scope with an illuminated reticle. A low powered variable with an illuminated reticle will handle anything from point blank to hundreds of m.
Agreed.

Elcan os3

That's what I have on my AR. I had an Eotech with a magnifier before and that worked well, especially just using the Eotech close in but the Elcan is nicer once you get past 200 yards or so. Mine has the target turrets (OS3Xb, I think) so being able to dial on your dope makes getting hits out at 300-500 yards easier, I find. Can't really go wrong with either, really depends on target size. You can have a much more refined hold with the Elcan than you can with even a 1 MOA dot.

I'm in the sub-$1000 market as well. As much as I'd love to pick up a K16i or Razor 1-6, a Viper PST is more likely in the cards. There don't seem to be many other contenders. Steiner p4xi? Burris XTR2?

I have a Burris Ar-536 on mine been very happy with it however I had to modify the base to push it back an extra inch or so to get the eye relief correct for me.
