Okay so I went to Target Sports a few days ago and decided to buy a used M14S. It supposedly has a USGI stock (no markings on the stock visible so I have to take their word for this) on it and has a mount and rings installed already. I'm no expert but the barrel looks ok with nice sharp rifling and the chamber seems to be in good shape...

My question is what kind of optic should I put on this rifle? It will mostly be a fun gun but might get to go deer hunting if the mood strikes me. I would appreciate speed of target acquisition over long range accuracy. Are red dots appropriate for this? Do they have magnification? How about holographic sights? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Jeff

PS there is a good chance the guy who put this rifle up for sale is on CGN... anything I should know about it? The deal is done and no hard feelings...

Have you read the sticky(ies) above and searched in this forum? There must be a million threads on that topic.

I recommend the Elite 3200 fixed 10x as a reasonable scope for this rifle. I have had success with that scope on several M1A's. For a beefier look and more magnification you may also consider the Falcon Menace 4.5x18x56. Both scope available thru site sponsors. For mounts, most people recommend ARMS or Sadlak but I have now achieved a solid mount with no zeroing problems with the cheaper Springfiled Armoury 3rd Gen - just make sure you follow the mounting instructions carefully AND use Loctite or similar thread locker.

For a mount - don't buy cheap and have to buy twice. There are only THREE mounts when it comes to the M14.

In no particular order:

1) Smith Enterprises
2) Sadlak
3) ARMS 18

some guys are aying the new Leatherwood mount MIGHT be the fourth, but that remains to be seen in my eyes.

Some of the above makers make an aluminum version of their mounts - avoid those like the plague. Buy a hardened STEEL mount. Buy once.

As for optics, almost anything for a high-powered rifle will work. I personally prefer Bushnell Elite and Leupold scopes, but lots of other good choices are out there like Falcon, Vortex, Nightforce, etc.

On my personal M14's, I run the following kit:

M14 No.1: ARMS18 mount, ARMS22 rings with 1" inserts, Bushnell Elite 3200 10X mildot scope.

M14 No.2: AKM EBR Chassis mount, Millet rings, Leupold 3.5-10x50 mildot with target turrets.

Oh yeah, of you get an enhanced battle rifle chassis, most come with integral mounting options. But they are a lot more expensive that just getting a scope mount.

Mine has a Sadlak Titanium mount with a US Optics SN4s. Also a USO Posa Slide & Lock MkI and its a nice combo.

Would like to try an Arms 18 mount with Nightforce compact 2.5-10x32. NF alloy/Ti rings.

Hope that helps for suggestions.

I have had a couple setups on my m14. First I went with an ARMS 18 mount with a leup mark IV 3-9x36 tmr with ultra low leupy quick release rings. It was good but the rifle weighed a lot.

I then got the Springfield scout mount and put a bushnell trs-25 red dot on it. It sits a little high, so I put a cheek pad on it, but can't co-witness with the irons. No biggie. This is the setup I have right now and I love it. Zero magnification, and for hunting out to 250m I'm good to go.

There is a scout rail called the ultimak rail, and i hear they sit real nice and low, allowing cowitness with the irons.

A chopped 18.6" m14 with a scout setup is pretty ####in good for 0-250m hunting IMHO.

True enough - if you want a scout mount, there are lots of cheaper options but you are then really limited on what optics you can use.

I am looking at 2 different setups for optics. They are:

Optics
1. Millet DMS 1 (available at Frontier Firearms) $310
2. Hilux CMR 14x24 (available at Wolverine Supplies) $360

Rings
1. Millett 30mm Med Tactical Rings

Mount (3 point mount, removale of stripper clip guide required)
1. SVT-40 Mounts (frontier firearms) $169.95
(Proper mounting is required as well, get some Prussian blue paste).

4. Daniel Defense Offset Picatinny Rail Mount (for red dot on fore end)

(I am going to go with the Millet once I get enough cash together but these are nice options).

I would have also said ARMS #18 as a mount, but the cost is higher. The SVT40 works well. You have to mount both mounts correctly. Receiver to mount fit is very important. Not all receivers are of course to USGI spec.!

I would get a Vortex Viper scope. Find them on the EE for around $400 shipped or under.
If you want an ARMS #18 mount I have 1 PM me ;)
(*trust me, you would want to PM me*)
As for the red dot idea. I have tried that & have found threw many competitions in 3 gun match's & other life experiences that they just don't work that great. Get the piggy back mount for your scope and you will be thanking me every time you use it.
