So yeah... didn't really think I would join the AR club for a variety of reasons, never thought I would bother with a restricted rifle, but I just did it.

That said, don't have much experience with them. Shot my friends a few times... what optic should I get? Is it possible to bridge the gap between a red dot and a scope? Just wondering... I am typically a "low key" shooter, I gravitated towards pistols, and .22 plinking with iron sights. So this is mostly a new one for me.

It all depends on your budget, one of my favorite optics for an AR that may end up taking shots out to 300+ yards is the Hi-Lux CMR. Wolverine carries them and for $400ish you get a 1-4×24 with a really nice illuminated reticle calibrated to 223 with zero-stop turrets and lifetime warranty.
I own two of them and think they are pretty much the best bang for the buck out there. The glass is actually really clear as well.
If you can afford more there are plenty of options in the $600 and up range but you would be hard pressed to find an optic as good as the CMR until you get into the $800+ zone. If the budget is tighter there are always Bushnell scopes for less.
Another one I really like is the Sightron 1-7 which will run you around $800 but the glass is amazing and with 7x at the top you can still reach out a ways if needed while still having 1x for CQB type shooting at less than 50 yards.

Could I afford I pricey one? I guess... but why? I am on the cheap side (well I guess its all relative bc I just bought an ar but I feel cheap on CGN) but anyway maybe something on the cheap-ish side? In the end I am a beginner doing this for fun. Not entering any competitions or going to ping off isis members, I'll leave that to the pros.

What is a Bushnell one in the $200 - $300 range? $800 is more than the rifle lol... but I get the sub $ 100 are likely crap.

If you want cheaper I'd just head down to the local gun store and pick something off the shelf. Keep in mind that when it comes to optics you really do get what you pay for most of the time and you can always remove it and use it on another rifle in the future if you decide to get more serious about shooting rifles like this.

I'm selling an affordable Bushnell AR optic that I don't need. Nothing wrong with it, just went with a red dot instead. Check out the EE, there's lots of good stuff there.

I'm pretty sure That Hunting Store in Richmond has that in stock. Might be worth checking with them, shopping local helps everyone. Any of our site sponsors of course are also a great option.

I went with a Vortex Spitfire 1x Prism on my AR and I'm pretty happy with it. I've got a couple Vortex optics now and I'm very happy with both.
