Optic for new long range shooter on a budget

So I'm dabbling at long range. I'm shooting a plain jane t3 and I've worked up a couple very good loads to get me to 300 meters. I'm holding 1/2 to 3/4" moa to that distance using a 3-9x40 scope with duplex reticle. I had a 6500 2.5-16 on it but sold it in a moment of weakness. I would ultimately like to get out to 800 yards on steel. I already have Talley lightweights in 30mm low so would like a 30mm scope up to 44mm objective. Any reticle is ok and I'm not worried about ffp but would like good reliable, resetable turrets with zero stop. Budget is under $750 and I'm not opposed to used scope as long as they're in good shape. I should mention its a 308 and I'm shooting 155gr scenars at 2850fps.

Dont skimp on optics, if you save your money you will not regret it. I would throw 600 dollar scopes out now just because they take up space, you get what you pay for IMHO

Research the SWFA 10x42 S?S in mil/mil.

These are well within your budget.

The glass is good but the best part is the the adjustments are accurate , you get what you dial, also they hold zero!

To get this level of precision you would be in the $1500 range CDN.

Burris Signature Zee Rings on a Talley rail and your good to 1000 yds or more.

About $600 cdn delivered to your door, takes about a week.
This. Fantastic value on a scope that is actually repeatable and durable, especially if the OP is able to wait for one of SWFA's big sales. My last couple SSs cost ~$350 to my door.

I have 3 Sightron S3 6x24x50s , LRMOA and they do come up on the EE at times . Upgraded mine with tactical turrets , 56 bux USD from Sightron and 62 CDN bux from Hirsh Precision . Elevation and windage . Just bought several zero stops from zerostop dot com and with minor fitting they work just fine . 16 bux each so i bought a couple of internal and a couple of ring externals . The guy ships instantly and mine arrived from the USA in 4 days . Mine track just fine .

Nod to SWFA.
Sold my sightron s3 6-24 LRMOA for a fixed 20x SWFA MOAQUAD and still dont regret it.

Last week hit a pop can at 578y on shot one with a year old 100y zero. They are on.

interesting (I would find that a variable would come in more handy)

figured there would be tons of spots to reach out in Tbay... unfortunately I don't have my rig with me :(

this

I can see stuff with my 3-15 light heritage I could not with a SIII or a PST 6-24 regardles light conditions

X3, I have both the 3-15x Premier Light Heritage and the TT525P. They are clarity redefined. If you've spent time with them you'll know.

I hear ya, i never would have thought I would like a fixed power scope until I realised all I ever did was keep my S3 on 24x.

For my style of shooting a fixed 20 is perfect. Definitley a not a universal setup.

Have a look at the Delta line. This one may not have enough mag to get you to 800, but the quality of glass in these scopes is phenominal for the price point.
I just bought their flagship Stryker 5-50 x56 MOA and it's comparable to many of the unobtanium ones like the NF ACTAR, IOR, S&B and Swaro, but at less than half the price.

Compared to Nightforce , S&B etc.... the reticle selection is very poor

An airgun scope?

OP, stick with the STAC, you will not be disappointed.

Best of luck in your search.

really it depends on the type of shooting you want to do. If your budget is limited a fixed power sightron 36x or weaver would be fine for a dedicated target rifle. Pretty useless for hunting. If this is something that you just want to plink at steel occasionally at 800 yards a bushnell tactical 10x would be able to do it and with the rebate now they are very inexpensive. Some people shoot f class tr with iron sights out to 900 meters which is almost 1000 yards so really a super duper scope is nice to have but not an absolute necessity to hit at longer ranges.

We have a lightly-used Bushnell Elite Tactical hdmr 3-21x 50 with a G2 reticle that we could sell for 750... I would think that would help the OP out a little bit ......hard to beat the value on the Bushnell's

Airgun scope? In Europe, some top tier shooters do use them on airguns, but I've not met anyone in Canada who shoots en expensive enough airgun to justify putting an optic like this on. In Europe, they are much more common.
The Stryker 5-50 seems to work nice on my F-Class gun and I know that they are being used by at least one F-Class shooter who is in the top 5 in Canada. Both he and I were using Nightforce prior.
When you reach that level of competition, you want the best equipment you can afford. That should speak volumes.
