I am thinking about putting a riflescope on my ruger gunsite scout rifle. Anyone have a suggestion or experience with optics for this rifle. Thanks

I've tried two scout scopes (Leupold & Burris) as well as an Aimpoint Pro. The Aimpoint was fastest in terms of acquisition but not by much. That being said my favorite of the three was the Burris Scout. I found it to be just as clear as the Leupold but the reticle is noticeably thicker thus slightly faster on target.

I can't tell you what works, but I can tell you what to avoid.

I tried a Vortex Sparc on one, and a Burris Fastfire. The Burris wasn't that great. At that distance from your eye, if you're not lined up perfectly behind the sight picture, you won't see that dot... It's just too far. I found the Vortex Sparc a lot easier for lining up, but the magnifier on it sucks (the field of view is super narrow and it's eye relief is crazy short). It's all right, but want low magnification (like x3 or x4) in addition to 1x mag... So the Sparc doesn't fit the bill.

So I mounted an XS sight rail on mine, and I'm saving up for one of the tactical 1-4 or 1-6 scopes with a traditional (shorter) length of eye relief.

Hi-Lux 2-7 long eye relief scope from Wolverine. I've got a couple Hi-Lux from them and they are great value. Never had a problem. If I was target shooting for longer distances I'd use a traditional mount, but for what this was bought for 7X is lots. Will let these old eyes put the bullets where they are supposed to go, yet it's as fast as open sights for me.

where did you purchase the xs rail in canada ?

If you want to put a conventional scope on and still be able to use the iron sights use a 3" cantilevered scope mount, these are available from SFRC and the Shooting Edge. I checked SFRC and the have both the quick detachable and fixed ones available from Vortex, which in the quick detachable are the American Defence mounts with Vortex name one. You can get away with a 2" cantilever with a long eye relief scope like the Bushnell 6500 1.25x8.
