Optic For The Sandbox

re

I was using a TA31RCO M4 with DOC Optic 7moa on a 14.5" carbine. Found it hard to get used to. It was a bit of an issue to use the red dot that high up as well........I have since sold the whole conglomeration and will be buying the Elcan Spectre DR. Several shooters that I know are using it and love it. Also, many SOCOM guys have switched from the very same setup I had to the Elcan Spectre DR..........and they can use basically whatever they find best. Again, it is a choice of preferance though.

I had set my mind on ACOG, but they're impossible to find and hit and miss with weaver rails. I'll be bringing the issued EoTech as well as an Aimpoint as backup.

Are there reports of ACOG Weaver mounts being wonky or something? I would like to know because I have an ACOG incoming and am thinking about mounting it on a Weaver rail using the Trijicon TA51W Weaver Adapter.

End of story.

Yeah I've heard of guys having issues.....most are fine though. Keep in mind that there ARE 1913 spec uppers in the system. Count the channels, if it has 13 then you're rocking, if not then.....keep your receipt.

I mounted a compact Leupold, VariX3 on the C7 back in 1993. A couple of other boys had other compact rigs designed for the Colt, but I don't recall make and model. A few guys also had the detachable rear iron sight that they acquired through one of the bin-rats. The only problem was the Fun-Cops and Pocket-Politicians that freaked whenever any of us had non-issue kit.

Same crap going on now in Afghanistan. I bought a Dropzone thigh rig and some bandolier type mag pouches for one of my former colleagues for his deployment last year - constant crap from the Camp Sergeant Major and whistles. Sounds like some of these jackass WO, MWOs and other PONTIs were writing people up on a daily basis. I can only imagine the outcry for using a non-issue, weapon sight.

If I were still in and prepping for a deployment, I would opt for either the VX3 1-5X20, or Mark-4 1.5-5X20.

I hate that piece of crap Elcan C79. I went through 3 of them on one tour because they kept falling apart, not to mention the weight and bulk.

One of my buddies is deploying in October this year... From what he has been telling me, using issue kit is "required" until you're outside the wire (something else they cant say now....), when pretty much ALL the CO's will allow you to use good stuff.

Nobody uses the issue tac vests because they suck balls. Nobody wants to use the ELCANS because they suck balls. I think he said he was gonna just rip off the elcan and put a carry handle iron sight on if worse comes to worst...

Don't even get the poor soul started on the M203....... :X

I actually used a colt carry handle sight on my first tour over the elcan....

I used the issued Eotech with a 4x magnifier on a flip mount. Worked like a charm for me. From what I am hearing right now the current bosses are pretty big on using the issued vests...thank the Gods that was'nt the case last time I was there.

I have seen my buddies issued vest.... it looked like the worst idea I have ever seen :/

When they were designing the NEW issue tac vest, they were asking the troops what they wanted... and pretty much EVERYONE said they wanted something "modular". All the ended up doing is changing it around a bit and adding 2 more C7 mag pouches IIRC.

From what I have heard, the ONLY reason the Canadian Forces Infantry are so effective, is that most of the time they ignore the dumb rules that the brass fires down on them... Way too many people there only to justify their existence with power point presentations

Im not big on the EOTech's. That's another thread though :D

I used the Elcan for most of the last tour, and an ACOG for the last month or so. I liked the ACOG better, but the Elcan wasn't that bad. If you are going with the BG 99% of the engagements are 300+meters, and you are probably not going to see who's shooting at you. I tried seeing them during contact with the Elcan, ACOG and LAV optics, and other than the odd rpg signature I didn't see sh*t. Anything up close, forget about shooting at them because all you are likely to hit is an AK held over a wall. If its close move as quickly as you can back to the last corner you walked around. My advice to anyone going outside the wire on a regular basis is take the money you want to spend on optics and buy a good set of boots, gps, small pack, and a sensible chest rig. You wil be money ahead. Everyone wants to go there and get in a gunfight. The problem is ,it's not a shooting war it's a try not to get blowed up war. Instead of researching optics, do your homework on IED's.
