The wife is at work today so I'll be out doing some shopping. Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable close quarter optic for a Norinco CQA? Something like a good red dot would be nice.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Cheers

I am very happy with my Vortex Strikefire Red/Green dot. It comes with a screw-in 2x magnifier that I have never used, but Vortex also makes a flip up 3x magnifier if you want to be able to add magnification down the road. Vortex has outstanding customer support, this optic has a limited lifetime warranty and it won't break the bank.

The one knock on the Strikefire is that the dot could be a bit brighter for sunny days. If you want a micro, the SPARC is another Vortex option that is very popular.

I personally would recommend the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24. Its got illumination as well so you can set it on 1x for the close quarters and on 4x for longer shots.

I swear by Eotechs. Depends on your definition of affordable, it's more affordable than an aimpoint, less affordable than a bushnell trs25.

In that price range, Vortex Sparc is another great option. I'm getting one for my 10/22 IPSC mini-rifle build. Another option that Ganderite liked at short distances was the Visionking 1.25-5x scope that you can get for $100 shipped. I just mounted it on my T97 but I need to fix the mounting options and add a cheek riser before I can properly review the scope, but I like it so far. Just fleabay "visionking 1.25" and among the first couple of hits, you will see it for $99.99 shipped. Please note that they are also selling a "3 pin reticle for AR" model for $130 but I didn't see anything like that on the manufacturer's site so it's quite possible that it's just the regular $100 scope sold for $30 extra lol

I ran it without illumination at an indoor range but you can definitely see a difference between the brightness settings. Got me decent grouping on crappy rings at 50 (2MOA, which is not bad for a semiauto)

...I would love an Eotech but I can't justify spending what I paid for the rifle on a sight haha....

Give it time, and soon you will consider the cost of the rifle as the maximum you will spend on it's optics. ;)
I have a Vortex Sparc and the Vortex PST 1-4x, and they are both outstanding and have both spent time on my NORC CQA.

Vortex is always a good choice!

Thanks for all the recommendations. I would love an Eotech but I can't justify spending what I paid for the rifle on a sight haha.

I ended up going with a Sightmark Reflex sight SM14002.http://www.sightmark.com/products/reflex-sights/ultra-shot-pro-spec-nv-qd-sm14002

Got great reviews and didn't break the bank. Works for what I'll be needing it for!

I tend to spend actually the same amount on optics compared to the rifle price.
I bought a browe bso for my T97: 1000$ optics vs 1000$ rifle
An elcan specter dr for my Tavor: 2100$ optics vx 2700$ rifle
eotech 512 with 3x mag with troy back ups for a jr carbine: 1400$ optics vs 900$ rifle
aimpoint m4 for my cz858: 1200$ optics vs 800$ rifle

I still have an xps2 and 3x mag and troys that are waiting for an AR15 that I'm looking at buying but can't make up my mind on a model, though I'm leaning towards a daniel defense. so that would be 1400$ optics vs 1600$ rifle

My eyes arent that good so my optics are as important as the rifle.

So how bad is the visionking really?

It's not a precision instrument by any means. More of a CQB sight with some ability to reach out. Ganderite sent a few hundreds downrange without losing zero, the glass is pretty good for the price range, but for example he said that his DMS' glass was better. He hasn't reached out with it but was satisfied at short distances. I haven't gone out past 50 with it either. Will see if I'll get the chance to do 100 tomorrow. Still on cheap rings (only bought for test-fit) and with bulk ammo, just off a sandbag up front, I was getting about 2MOA.
