Have been slowly putting together an 18 inch "SPR" type AR build and the time has come to decide on optics.
Looking for some advice from the pros on what to look for.
I know I want it near the 2.5-10 mag range and so far have 3 choices.
First and cheapest is the vortex viper PST 2.5-10x32 FFP MRAD
Second would be the Leupold mark 4 LT/R 3.5-10x40 TMR
Third is the nightforce 2.5-10x32

If anyone's got any other suggestions too that'd be great. The Mark 4 is about as much as I want to spend in terms of budget, but if it's considerably worth the extra 300 bucks for the NF Id probably go that route.

For an SPR I'd look more in the 4-16 range. I find 10X too limiting for any sort of precision work. It is plenty to hit a figure 11 at 400 yards, but if you are worried about scoring, you'll want more zoom IMO

Good point, but I should add that I'm not much for an MOA shooter. I'm Talking more along the lines of MOB (minute of badguy)

I guess it depends on your eyes but I shoot on 10x out to 700 yards. Past that I'm comfortable cranking the zoom but find I actually produce tighter groups with the lower power.

My AR (556) has a 1-4 and I don't have issues at 400 yards but I'm happy shooting 2 MOA steel at that range.

Just finishing a 308 AR build and it will have either the NF 2.5-10 or Kahles 3-12 for extended shots out past supersonic range

Just make sure your choice is actually clear on max power, some scopes in your price range can be a little picky

I've got a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40 on my tweaked M14 and shoot it out to 475 on a weekly basis. 10x will do you fine well past that, especially if you're more about shooting steel anyways.
