Optic to get started in longer range shooting?

I'm interested in starting to learn more about longer range shooting. The goal is to eventually set up a dedicated precision rifle style rifle with an upper mid range FFP scope such as a PST Gen II or similar. For now I am considering putting a different optic on my Tikka 308 hunting rifle that has an exposed elevation target. Currently I shoot 3-400 yrds max with just basic reticle hold overs. Would I gain much experience from putting something such as a Viper HS LR on it even though it is SFP with a BDC reticle? Or am I better just put the money towards buying the bigger scope I want such as a PST and run that for the shooting season to practice then switch back to my lighter scope for hunting season?

Im getting into longe range shooting too, since my CQB options have been greatly diminished. I run two rem700s, one for target and the other one will be for hunting, when I learn how to hunt. It didn't take long before I was out-shooting milsurp ammo (seems to be more of a factor than the optic.) When it comes to experience, more the merrier. Use what you've got until your skill surpasses your tools, then get better tools. my 2cents.

The Bushnell 10x40 has been widely used, and has received good reviews. The Weaver KT15 is another.
Keep your eyes open for one of the old steel Weaver T series scopes. Excellent units.
