I am looking for a scope around the 5.5-22x50 range. Now I believe the Nightforce is the scope I want,And i may just keep saving for it, it has the il reticual,100 moa travel,good glass and a proper zero stop,everything i want. As with others, I am not sure if i really "need" this scope or not or if its worth saving for. This optic will be going on my sako a7, hopefully used for hunting and varmit and paper out to 1000 yards, hopefully even a bit more for paper. Anyways most of my hunting is at dusk, and will be shooting against a bush background. Low light is my main concern, i like how the sightron has the 100 MOA travel,hopefully wont need a canted rail,postitve tracking,but is the glass good enough without the illumination and is the zero stop really that neccesary? Do you find the vortex Pst good in low light, is 65 MOA enough? If i have to spend $200 on a 20moa base maybe i should just save for the scope i really want?Any thoughts from people that own these would be helpful.

You can get a 20MOA base for around $50-70 to your door, just FYI.
The PST has great glass that performs very well in low light. Is 65MOA enough? Well that depends on what cartridge and bullet you're shooting, and how far you really want to go. It's definitely enough for 1000 yard shooting with most rifles. For the glass and features that it has, the PST is an awesome bang for your buck. If you can swing the extra $500-800, I believe that the NF scopes are more reliable and robust, but weight may be an issue with your rifle. If choosing a scope for an A7, I certainly wouldn't get anything near as heavy as the NF.

The Trijicon with the illuminated reticle sure has caught my eyes.
They claim this set up allows shooting with both eyes open.
This could very well be the meow's jammies for me.

Just mounted a 6-24 PST on my a7 on friday, with Burris posi rings. Used the +/-10 inserts to give my scope more elevation travel. Might pick up the +/-20's yet.
But I haven't had a chance to put any rounds through the barrel with this scope yet. But all indications are its going to be just fine. And all the options that come with the PST you can't beat for that price.

if you want the nightforce, and can afford it, why settle for anything less than what you want.
Yes, the sightron sIII have great glass and are a little cheaper, but are you always going to be comparing your sightron to the NF?
I own a 10x42 sIII and compared it side by side to a NF 3-15 (?) with the turrets on the NF, you could grasp one and shake the scope, and they would not turn. Very solid, with impressively loud clicks.
The glass was also very nice.
we were shooting, looking into the setting sun, darn near at dusk. We waited around after we packed up as the sun dropped below some hills, and we could really test them.
slight edge to NF, esp w/ the illum. reticle.

Great replies guys, As i figured both optics each have their merits and fans and i guess i'll just have to decide which features are most important to me. This thread has made me realize that I probably shouldnt be putting a heavy NF on a light A7 though.
From my research I took vortex off my list for any optics. Too many user issues, even on the high end models. I am definetely going with Sightron for my next LR scope. When some shooters say the glass is slightly less than NF, some say equal and some even say slightly better (glass perfermance is all subjective to the individual) and being that NF is one of the top choices I think Sightron is the best value period. Couple that with their excellent tracking and factor out the extra strength of the NF that a guy like me doesnt need and I have my winner. The asian made vortex scopes have problems with their tracking at higher elevations that Haggen Dazs found out the hard way, alot of canted reticles reported and other minor failures that really turned me off. Glass seems to be noticeably less clear than Sightron so all I see is fancy options and good looks - no different than the other asian brand optics just a little better quality. Customer service is great but when it comes to high end optics I dont want to pack up my rifle and cut short a range day because my scope piled up. Of course if you have the money for NF then Id give them a good look, the only people that dont love them either cant afford them or can afford S&Bs or Marchs. Just my 2 cents...
