Hello folks. I'm looking for a good scope to compliment a .17 WSM on an 1885 Winchester Low Wall. I have been looking at the Leupold 3x9x33 EDR Lightweight Rimfire, a VX-1 4x12x40 as well as Sightron SII 4-16x42mm AO . I know Leupold 3x9x33, had one on a CZ 455, great scope, but I'm wondering if it has the "reach" for the .17 WSM cartridge, and I'm not sure of the quality of the VX-1. The Sightron has good reviews, but the bell at 42mm is getting rather large for the 1885. Any suggestions? Thanks

It depends on what are you planning to shoot: game or paper? For precise shooting, I would go with higher magnification possible. I have 6-24x50 Vortex PST on my 17HMR, and even on 100 meters sometimes I don't see holes on paper target on max magnification.

I would go with Sightron SII 4-16x42mm then if these are the only choices you have. But considering the hole diameter from 17WMR, you, most likely, won't be able to clearly see the hits even at 16. Here is a video with Bushnell 3-9x40. You can make your own judgment. Another thing to consider is a glass clarity in low-end and inexpensive scopes. At high magnification, it's blurry/foggy, and you may need to use a lower setting than the max of the scope to clearly see the target.

If your target shooting from a bench then I wouldn't go with anything less than 24X fine crosshair or target dot.
