Optics for a 590A1

I've never considered optics for my 590, but I think it's a mistake to suggest that they would serve no purpose. Not everyone enjoys perfect vision, and having the aiming point and the target on the same focal plane is helpful to everyone. I was not that long ago that the opinion was that rifle sights on a shotgun made the gun too specialized. That has proven untrue, and the same will be proven for appropriate optics.

Indeed, the person's eye is one of the reasons why one would put optics on a combat-oriented shotgun.

If you don't really want to shell out 200$+ for a no-battery red dot/holo sight, I suggest mounting a 1x-4x power Bushnell banner or trophy.

Low magnification will let you be fast and you can dial it up enough to very easily see in the 150yrds range.

The only thing I'm sticking on my 590 when I get one is a 6 shell sidesaddle on the stock and another one on the receiver.

Though I am a proponent of ghost rings only, for arguments sake:

One advantage of Aimpoint over Ghost rings or standard irons, is that you can keep both eyes open, and do not have to aim, by lining up two points on two axes having to worry about focus on three objects at the same time (target, front post, rear sight) as you only need to lay a dot on top of your target. Also unlike scopes they are virtually parallax free so it really couldn't be easier.

I looooooove my aimpoint on my XCR in .223. It would be nice on a shotty as well. I just chose not to in order to keep the bulk and weight down on an already heavy marine mag. Ghost rings are accurate and fast enough for me and my purposes. On a combat oriented semi-auto the aimpoint would make even more sense to me. But to each his own. You may like it just for aesthetics and that is your perogative.

I use both eyes open for 90% of my shooting but the other good thing about red dots etc are they are way better in low light conditions!

How many here actually shoot in low light conditions?? In any case low light shooting issues are solved with a tritium bead. Having a visible bead or optic is of little value if you can't identify your target. For those with corrected vision, wear your contacts or glasses. The advantage of an optic are only valid when using slugs at medium to long range. Inside 50 yards a bead sight or other iron sights are more than capable of making hits. The real question is what is the purpose for this shotgun. With a clear purpose in mind one can determine what is or is not justified as far as optics and accessories.

I find a bead site hard to use. I find ghost sites very easy to use for fast accurate shooting. I am not sure whether I will put a surefire foreend on it yet, I might.

On the trijicon reflex how bright is it? Anybody try the Meprolight reflect as well?

USP you got money to burn or what?:D

oh ya, and Why not just rail the 870?

Well eventually I was thinking about going 4x4 in Alaska...when I go I cant bring the 14 incher with me as its an NFA item. So with this in mind I figured I would do up the Mossberg for the trip....just in case :dancingbanana:

This site is looking good...the ARMs mount is a 1913 rail mount right?

A bead sight hard to use?? Place the bead on your target, squeeze trigger. At further ranges you'll have to learn your hold over. Nothing wrong with ghost rings either..

After looking through Pounder's reflex sight I must admit I am a fan of these things, but for now my 590 will stay as is. I recall an article written by a fellow who attended the General Rifle course at Gunsite. He said that his scores were not particularly good throughout the early stages, but he kicked butt during the night fire component of the course. His rifle was an M1-A Scout with a reflex site.

Hmmm, well I've had a dot on my 590 for over 20 years, it's a Tasco PDP1...one of the first red dots out. It has worked great and I think anyone that doesn't at least try it is missing out.

Perhaps, I find a bead site useless...I find ghost rings extremely fast and accurate to use. Maybe its because a bead on a 14" barrel its to short..not sure. Optics can add speed if they are setup right.

saying you've never run out of light when shooting waterfowl ?
numerous times have i run out of light so much that my highvis bead became unusable on my fabarm.
luckily it has 11mm dovetail rail on the reciever so i could drop on a red dot easily and there was another 15 mins of prime shooting time
