Hi there,

Just picked up a Ruger American Rifle in 5.56mm. Can anyone advise as to what type of scope/optics I should get for the rifle? I seriously doubt I will be shooting anything beyond 300m for there is nothing around here.

Thanks again for your advise.

Bob

I run a 3-9x on mine, as there are a lot of opportunities to shoot out to 300+ yards where i am. These rifles (at least mine is) are exceptionally accurate, and can take advantage of some magnification. That said, for recreational shooting, a lightweight 1-6x or even 1-4x would keep things handy.

Thank you for your reply! Any brand or model I should be looking at? With a 3-9x optics, how far would that get me in way of distance that I can see the target? Hitting it is a whole diff. story! :)

I guess that depends on your eyes and budget. If you just want to bang steel, a GOOD 9x should take you 400 easily. SIG, Burris, Leupold and plenty of others make good glass at all price points. Mine wears a SIG Whiskey 3, and 300 yards is relatively easy.

I use a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 4.5-14 X 44 on my 17 Hornet, and I find it just about perfect. Not terribly expensive, but seems to be a really good scope. I’ve had it for about 4 years now. Depending on what you will be shooting at out at 300 yards, you might find 9X a little low powered. If you’re aiming at the head of a gopher, for example, 9 times magnification is going to be equivalent to trying to hit it at 100 feet with zero magnification. Can be done, but even identifying the target clearly might be a challenge.

Something to consider.
