Hi Folks, I just spent the last few hours perusing this forum looking for suggestions and ideas about what we should put on a Rem 11-87 and a Mossberg 535. My son and I are late to the game here with deer season fast approaching. He likes the idea of a red dot for his 535 and I have no experience with scopes or red dots at all. We both need optics of some sort.
The land that we have access to hunt is a true mix of bush and abandoned ranch land so ranges will vary from in your lap to 200 yards. Realistically our price range is limited to the low to lower mid-range, probably $300 or less. Preferably less. I guess we, along with most of you are looking for the biggest bang for our buck. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated and will help get us looking in the right direction.

go to your local dealer and look at the burris line of shotgun scopes .thy come in at around 250$ and are a great scope for slug hunting .D

When my Mossberg 535 has its slug barrel on it also has a Weaver Classic V3 (1-3x20mm) in Leupold quick release rings. If I can't see something well enough with 3x magnification I shouldn't be shooting at it with shotgun slugs.

Some cantilevers come further back over the receiver than others, so eye relief may be a factor.

Again, not being too familiar with scopes would 4-5" of relief be what I am looking for?

At least 4" for the Rem. You can see the difference between the 535 and the 11-87. The 535 comes back almost to the trigger.

I have a cheap $50 tasco reddot on my rem 870 cantilever rifled barrel. I took a deer last year at 65yrds and it was a quick shot. No magnification.

That being said I'm thinking of changing to a scope because I want to reach out more. With the rifled barrel I should be able to ethically shoot up to 150yrds easily. With a no-mag red dot that's a hard shot cause the dot is as big or bigger that the vital zone.

Let us know what you chose to go with.
