Hello everyone,

I am looking to purchase optics for my Ruger SR-22 which as most of you know is a 22lr. It does come with a factory picatinny rail on top of the action.

I am looking for something in the red dot category. Something of decent quality. If the optic has the option of zoom, that's a bonus. I will probably be using it as far as 50 yards. My current budget is of $250.

Any suggestions are welcome, thank you!

If you want to use this rifle out to 50 yds I would recommend a scope and not a red dot. I use a 2-7x on mine and find it just right for 25-50 yd plinking and occasional 25 yd target shooting. This is a Bushnell AR-22 2-7x which is very inexpensive ($150-200) and also a decent quality optic with a side focus adjustable objective:

If you are determined to get a red dot I would recommend a reflex stye rather than a tube style, for a much better sight picture:

The burris fastfire is a decent example of a reflex sight, however I much prefer my current C-More STS (bought used on the EE for $250):

Awesome, thank you Tom for the insight. I'll give the Bushnell AR-22 a look.

Also, is that the archangel setup? I am looking for a mag like that for my SR22 but it's very hard to come by.

I have a 10-22 in an ATI stock (total cost of the operation: 250$ and it looks badass), and I use a "bushnell rimfire" 4X32. It's a fixed zoom, so it's cheap AF. Cost me 20$ on sale in a local store, I think it's usually close to 40$ though. It's good from 25 to 50 meters.

A red dot is really only good at close range or when shooting a large target. At 50 meters, a burris fastFire 2 with a 4 MOA red dot will be about two inches. It means you can hit a tree, but on a paper target, 2 inches off the bulleyes is quite far off. If hunting small animals (it's a 22lr after all, not shooting at a moose with that), 2 inches is more than the size of a squirrel, and enough to make a lethal shot on a fox non-lethal and merely injure it.

I agree with Tom though, if you want a red dot reflex are more fun than tubes.

Fixed zoom scopes will often get you more quality for a price than variable zoom. My bushnell rimfire is good enough for my needs, but it's honestly not the best thing around (eye relief is too small). A 100$ fixed zoom rimfire scope will get you something nice if you're willing to go that route.

It depends what you're looking to shoot at. I have a Bushnell TRS25 red dot on my Colt .22 AR and it's great for hitting plates from 100 yards in standing and sometimes kneeling. Probably not the best thing for shooting squirrels but that's not what I use it for.
