I am trying to figure out the best scope for a single shot heavy barrel .338 Lapua. I am looking at the nightforce 12-42 NXS or the 8-32 NXS. I have always been totally satisfied with Leupold VX3.. What specifically do you gain by stepping up to a NF scope. My intent is just to bang gongs at or over 1000 yards. I was hoping for advice on reticles, magnification, and brand as it applies to this application. I don't mind paying more to get more but I am looking for performance differences to rationalize a 2000 purchase.

Thanks

You can't go wrong with the Nightforce scope. I don't think that you'd need more than the 5.5-22x but there's no reason not to get the one you want. I know that Rick at ATRS is a big fan of the 8-32x NXS. And we all know how he plays. And you'll only pay a bit more for the NXS over the Mark 4 Leupold so it's small potatoes.

New Sigthron SIII LR 6x24 is all you will need. Optics are equal or better then the NF and the mechanicals are great. Lots of internal adjustment to reach out to a mile. 1/4 min clicks.

Almost 1/2 the price.

PM if interested.

They make a 32X if you really want higher mag. Side focus just like the NF NXS but with quicker ratio focusing (less turrent movement to adj for parallax).

We and I say we, representing a dozen or so shooters who I have built 338 Lapua AIs for over the last year, have found the NF 8x32 is about as close to a perfect match as is possible.
65MOA elevation even on a flat rail will get you out to 1 mile. In my own rifle 19.5 moa to gets me to 1000 yards.
The 12x42 NXS has only 40 moa elevation, so unless you run a plus 40 moa rail you are pretty limited on distance and then you may not be able to zero at 100 yards.
Being in the business I can use any make of scope I want, they are all considered business expense. I have had S&Bs , USOs and sold them in favor of the Nightforce scopes. I personally do not believe there is a better scope for real long range shooting.
Apparently many of the LE agencies and US military specialty groups feel the same as they are using NF scopes as well.

I am new at this long range stuff, but I sprung for a NightForce 5.5-22X56 NXS NP-R1 reticle on top of my Savage 12F/TR 308 and starting at 100 yards, progressing out to 275, then 500, then going out to 1000 yards and ringing the 1000 yard plate (first shot) with a buddies help (drop tables) and then returning back to the 100 yard setting and placing 3 in the exact same ragged hole that I shot before starting the progression out to 1000 yard string.
I would whole heartedly endorse a NightForce. 5.5-22X56 NP-R1, it has 100 MOA adjustment. You can see your hits on steel at 1000 yards, better than most spotting scopes. (can you tell I like mine)
My 2 cents!
