Thinking about upgrading the sights or maybe mounting a scope on my Marlin XLR .444 as those +150 yd shots with the open sights are a little tough and I'm looking for more accuracy. Looked at a Leupod 2x7 but am looking for input and experienced opinions, what do the gunnutz think is the best optics/sights for the new Marlin XLR .444?

try a small 2.5 or 4x luep. very light and compact. they suit lever guns. no need for a large scope on a 200 yrd gun. i have a compact 4x on my 444 and a1x4 20 mm on my 30 30. they sit low and carry well.

Scope mounting choices - either on the action or as a scout scope mount.

On the action - agree with either a 2.5 x or 4 x compact or a 1x4 variable.

On a scout scope mount - one of the intermediate eye relief scopes (8-9 inches - Leupold has a nice FX model)

Try both before you make your choice.

WILLIAMS PEEP SIGHTS

to scope a marlin is a sin.

I have made 150 yrd shots with my peeps, and would do it again. peeps are far superiour to the standard open sights

I agree that a compact 2.5 power scope would be best bet if you want to go that route, peep sights are also excellent but don't sell the open sights short...they are still faster on target then anything else!!

loopy 2.5 IER sits on mine. Does snap shots outta the brush at 20 and takes me out to the occasional 150. Got that held on with talley rings. Its no digrace to the gun. You'll find most guys dont look at that much if you got a 12 point in the back

I'd never try and talk you out of a quality scope like a loopy, but I just thought I'd pass on that some of the experienced lever gunners on one of the marlin boards down south have been very happy with the performance and durability of the bushnell banner 1.5-4.5X32 which retails for less than $100.

Apparently stands up to the heavy recoil with no trouble...

Another vote here for Ashley, Lyman, or Williams peep sights. Scopes on Marlin lever guns look like crap and ruin the quick handling these guns are known for.

I have one of these on mine (.30/30) - nice package when you reach the age where at 100m you know over iron sights there's a target out there somewhere..
