I'm looking to install a scope or red dot on my Mossberg and not sure what's good for me. As it's a smooth bore I don't expect to shoot over 150 yards. Any suggestions on what is better? thanks

A red dot without magnification is certainly good enough for a smooth bore and that range.

I have an accessory barrel for my 535, rifled for slugs. With that I install a Weaver Classic V3 (1-3x20) scope but don't get too excited about an optic mounted on the receiver with a removable barrel.

Thank you for your response. I'll try that and see what happens.
What mount/ring do you recommend?

My 535 came from the factory with the receiver drilled and tapped. It wasn't hard to find a Weaver one piece base that lined up, I'm sure Mossberg drills and taps their 500 and 590 models the same. You can find the mount charts through www.weaveroptics.com.

Are you leaving your optic on it all the time? I bought my shotgun primarily for birds but found an accessory slug barrel I might use to hunt deer, so I want to remove the scope from the receiver and replace it easily. In the EE I found a set of used Leupold quick release rings that return to zero pretty reliably. Can't remember how much I gave for them but it was a good saving over new and didn't sting too much (my mother's from Dundee.)
